Exclamation Crankshaft Sensor Help

I've been looking all over and I can't seem to find the exact answer to my question. We have a 2000 2500 Cummins Ram. The CPS sensor is going out and we need to replace it. If anyone knows a good place to find directions on how to do it or has any helpful hints it would be greatly appriciated. TIA

Just wondered, what are the indications the CPS needs to be changed??
Thanks in advance.

The CPS is located with on the driver side of the crank pulley. Looking at it from the front of the truck, it's in the 5 o'clock position.

It's real easy, it's only one allen head bolt that holds it in. Loosen the bolt, pull it out, put the new one in.

This is what you're looking for. Items 1,2 & 3 are the sensor, o-ring and bolt. Right where the sensor goes in is directly behind the crank pulley. Disregard that other sensor showing, that's the MAP sensor.....

The cam position sensor is the one that's a pain in the butt. It's located directly behind the VP44 or CP3.

The cam and crank position sensors are the same part number and are interchangeable. If you suspect one is going bad, you can swap them and see if it effects the other system. The crank sensor doesn't have much effect other than the tach. Now the cam position sensor will really screw things up. The ECM doesn't know when to fire the injectors, it'll smoke like crazy, it may not run at all.

Cartalk, a good indication that the crank position sensor is going out is erratic tach readings.

Thanks for all the help. We think it's the Crankshaft because of the codes that are coming up. It randomly doesnt like to start but if you go back 20 min. to an hour later it fires right up also the Tach randomly takes a dump. The truck will be driving down the road just fine and the Tach will just drop to zero. It also seems like the alternator will quit charging sometimes as well. If you think this sounds like something else let me know.

Check the wiring harness that runs up the passenger side of the engine block.

You have the alternator, AC compressor, intake temp, and a host of other sensors that run in that bundle and it has a tendency to rub through and ground out.

Easiest way to get at it is to remove the front passenger tire and fender liner and then you''l be able to get at the harness easier.

Unplug EVERYTHING and inspect the harness for wear. When you Reconnect everything, re-route it so it's not in any wear spots.
