Angry 2010 Ram Heavy Duty Steering Problem

Hi All. Just bought my $52k 2010 Ram 4x4 Crew Short TRX4. Absolutely love the truck, except for the steering, which feels like a 1985 Bronco I had, which had 190,000 miles on it. When I bought it, the steering wheel was canted to the left about 15 degrees while going straight, but it doesn't pull to the side (when I'm on a flat, straight road, at least). The on-center feel is horrible, numb, with a huge amount of play, and when you finally do get the wheels to catch, it's rather abrupt. It's dangerous to drive it like it is, because it's work to keep it in the center of the lane. I'm taking it to the dealer today to get the steering wheel straightened and, hopefully, they'll be able to fix the looseness. I've owned two other 2500's, both '04.5's, and they felt much tighter in the steering. I hope this numbness and looseness isn't Dodge's attempt to "smooth out the steering", as I cannot and will not tow with this problem. It's like herding cats!! Dodge, if you're reading this, this is a serious problem, which I'm not the only one to have... Car and Driver said this, "The steering, however, is just as dull and unresponsive right off-center as in the 1500, requiring up to 15 degrees of steering-wheel rotation to get those front wheels to bite into a turn (at which point they do abruptly)." Fix it, Dodge, before someone has an accident as a result...

Sorry to hear about your problem. Don't the new trucks have rack and pinion steering?

only the two wheel drives have rack and pinion, the four wheel drives have recirculating ball setups to handle the weight of the front end and torque at the front wheels better. i had an '07 2500 and it's steering was dead-on. hopefully they get it sorted out, i'd really like to have one of the new HD's.

Thank you for clarifying, Navyr6. NGR2000, I hope that your truck is dead-on, but please post if you are experiencing the same problem that I am...

Anyone else having the same sloppy steering problem?

UPDATE: Took it to the dealer for the alignment to straighten the wheel, and told them about the horrendous steering, and this is what the result is, on the service invoice: "perform four wheel alignment. Unable to perform alignment. Ordered Steering gear." Hope this isn't a widespread problem (and that this actually fixes my problem)

2K miles with no issues. Overall feel is much tighter than my 2008 Tundra that drove like a big car. Just too loose for my tastes... the Dodge drives like a well behaved truck so far.

Good luck!

Got it back....better, but still sloppy, IMHO... plus, my father was following me, and said he thought it was dog-legging... Will take it to an independent alignment shop to get checked next week. I think it's only a matter of time before Dodge, if they're smart, will replace the current steering with something a lot tighter. It's scary wnough to drive unloaded, can't imagine towing several tons with this problem.....

i've had no steering problems with either the 07 2500 i traded or my 09 1500. overall though, i miss my 2500, it felt much more stable and i miss the diesel and manual transmission. i'm planning on getting another HD, just don't know when yet.

This is really getting on my nerves. I love everything about the truck, minus the steering. I know I'm not the only one who has a loose one, as either car and driver or motortrend (forgot which one) noticed the loose steering too....could it be that I'm noticing it more because I came from a 2008 Charger SRT8?
