Default 2500 5spd manual.

I going to buy a 1998 2500 4x4 359 cummins 24 valve 5 spd manual with 4.10 diffs tomorrow. There is 200k on the truck and the transmission shifts good in all the gears. I know that the 5 spd transmissions give trouble. Does any one know how much work or how hard it is to get to the nut that comes loose on 5. The truck has a banks 4 inche stainless exhaust and banks programmer on it. Other than that it is stock. The injector pump was done within the last 15 20K miles.
Is there anything that I need to look at close that is prown to giving trouble. Thanks in advance for any help.

the 5th gear nut is the only real know problem with the nv4500, for the 4x4, you will need to pull the t-case and the aluminum rear cover on the trans and your there, personally i wouldnt mess with it unless it happens, it doesnt cause any damage if it happens and is still completely driveable, and its not a gaurenteed fail either, its just known to happen on some

there is also the killer dowel pin. its behind the timing cover on the passenger side. it can come out and potentially end up in the timing gears.

the kdp is a real good thing to check on, its actually on the drivers side of the engine, real close to the injection pump, but if that little POS falls out, it has a potential to destroy the entire engine, some simple tools and about an hour of your time, to repair it

Can you tell me more about the KDP. Can I see it from the outside or do I have to pull off the timing cover. Is this a problem on a 2001 cummins as well. If so that might explain why my brothers 3500 got a new motor.

yes, a problem from 89-02, you have to pull the timing cover to see it, just pull the fan/hub, and the fill tube, and the dampner, then the cover will come off, no puller needer for the dampner, just take out the four bolts and it slides off

Whats the chances that cummins fixed that problem on a remanfactured motor done in 2003. I guess it would be a good idea to check out it out on the 3500 as well. Whats the best thing to do with the KDP pull it out and throw it away or pull it out and put it back in with thread lock. Thanks for your help so far.

03 and newer do not have the kdp problem, and 98-02 24v engines had a fix but for some reason not all engines got it, and the only way to tell is to pull it apart, for a fix, sometimes you can tap the kdp in all the way and peen the end of the hole in the cover, sometimes that cant be done either, there is a bolt right next to the kdp and just need to make a tab out of a piece of metal and bolt it on over the kdp, its also a good idea to check all the bolts inside the cover too, atleast touque them or pull them and locktight them back in
