what do you think?
hey guys as you know im in search for a new truck i want to switch from a v6 gas truck to a diesel and today i had got some opinions from guys i work with after telling them i went to a dealership looking for a truck and of course the dealership didnt have what i wanted so for ****s and giggles i told them i wanted to know how much a brand new truck would cost me and of course it was way out of my price range so some of the things that were said today was that i dont need a diesel truck because i wont ever use the power or drive it right and that i wont use the 4x4 enough or use it right so i will end up replacing parts on it now all of this made me pretty mad because i know if i had the truck i want i would use it yes it would mostly b a daily driver and then the guy was trying to tell me i wont save anymore money on fuel with a diesel which i thought was bull because i have a v6 with a manual tranny now and i average about 18 mpg with a single cab long bed truck now so if i were to move up to an extended cab long bed with a diesel and 4x4 i would get the same mileage as i do now or better after i do somethings to it so what i want to know is what do you guys think about all of this thanx for your info i value it because you guys are alot smarter about all of this then guys i work with

Was that all one sentence?
Anyway...
If you buy a brand new diesel and you don't gut the emissions and run a programmer, you can expect to get 12-15 mpg or so. If you get a truck without emissions crap (5.9 or a modified 6.7) you can expect to get a fair bit higher than that. My last couple of tanks are mixed driving about 50/50 with a romp or two on the throttle every day and I've been getting about 16 mpg combined. I know, however, that I can get as high as about 22-24 while empty and cruising at 60-70 mph. Towing 14k+ I get about 12.
A buddy of mine has a 24 valve 2nd gen with a 5-speed and he usually gets around 20-22 mpg with mixed driving.
Basically, your fuel economy won't go up a whole lot, but power will go up exponentially.

Get your financing in order and call them up. Just because they're asking $23k doesn't mean you can't call them up and offer $20k (you do have to pay for airfare, hotels and fuel to get it home), and after personal inspection if there's something you don't like about it you still have to get home somehow.
There's a 93 Accord in our inventory right now and the window sticker says somewhere around $5k. Someone might just pay it, but I'm pretty sure he would sell it for half that much if someone offered.
