Default Newb cummins ?s

Okay, so the cummins gene runs in my blood starting with my Grandpa.
I just bought my first about a week ago, and was just wondering what "special" things I should know about her. Shes an auto, 2wd 2500.
Did they come factory with an overload spring as mine has one (bought it with a fifth wheel setup for a camper, which will be removed.)
What is all this I see about fuel additives? I dont wanna start putting stuff in the fuel that will make the engine dependant on that additive.
What kinda performance can I expect outta the auto when I hook it up (shouldnt be pulling more than 6k most of the time its hooked up).

thanks in advance.

no need for any additives, but a small amount of 2 cycle oil seems to make the pumps a little happier, but rule #1 for that 24valve, put a fuel pressure gauge in it ASAP!
