I really want to buy a used Cummins 2500, but the truck will sit for spells. I hear that is terrible for them, at least it was for my F250 6.0. The turbo has viens that can stick causing turbo issues.( Can get costly) How is the Cummins turbo built?
I cannot me the only person that has this challenge. Can anyone comment on their experiences? Should I just consider a gasser and not mess with diesels?
Thanks,
T

How old are you looking at, and what are you going to use it for? The 07.5 and newer trucks have variable vane turbos that can gum up and stick if the exhaust brake isn't used enough and if it's not driven hard enough to burn it off. They're really meant to be driven hard all the time towing heavy loads on the highway. They're not so good at being a daily driver/grocery getter.

Why do you want a diesel? Do you have a heavy load to tow? Can you put it through more stress than just the occupants riding in it?

Horatio hit the nail on the head.. They need to be worked otherwise your begging for trouble. My '06 does not have the VGT issues, and it 'can carbon up' without too much trouble, you just gotta work it that much harder to clean it out. My 6000lb trailer is hardly enough to stress it.

Thats what I was afaid of. Variable vanes for a lightly driven truck is fatal.
I think I will sell mine and get a gasser.
Thanks,

Ya, we've got a travel trailer right now, and I think a 5th will be a lot nicer overall. The only beef I have with a 5th is you lose your box.. so taking an ATV with you, you have to tag a trailer on behind.. which you can do in a lot of places up here... same goes with a boat.
