2002 Cummings Ram 2500 won't start, codes 1691 and 0230
I tried to start my truck this afternoon and found it won't start. It is a little low on fuel but not overly so. I'm getting the following trouble codes 1691 and 0230. Though one or both of these codes might have been present for a while and not necessarily just showing up now.

If anyone can suggest a check I can make. Engine cranks and turns over well but we had to boost it after a while. It's a little cold out but not overly so (-5C) I'd be very thankful. You guys have been awesome in the past!

make sure your lift pump is working do not know what style youhave check the flow you should be able to bump motor over with starter by just tapping key and aux pump should prime the system for appx 15 seconds you can check flow that way. you should at least hear pump run suspecting that is why you have out of range dtc the second may be set by a lift pump not working but can sometimes and more often than not be caused by a inj pump failure due to the lift pump being inoperative and causing damage to the inj pump try making sure lift pump is working and if not replace and try starting again if not working yet susupect inj pump
I've been limited in what I can do so far but I suspect that the transfer pump is dead. My multimeter is dead so I stuck an LED with resistor into the plug going into the plug going into the transfer pump which looks similar to this:

I get a good voltage out of it when the key is turned so can I say definitively that I have a bad transfer pump that needs replacing?

So we determined the transfer pump wasn't working and replaced it. After bumping the starter several times and several attempted starts it's still not running. I checked the fuel flow at the water separator and it's now getting lots of fuel.
Any suggestions? We're gonna try and replace the filter as well, just in case that's hindering flow.

In looking into this issue I read that what can happen is the transfer pump can fail with no warning causing the injector pump not to get proper lubrication thus leading to its premature failure. Fuuuuuuuuu...........
My friend found a way to check the injector pump by opening up 3 injector lines and observing the flow out the lines.
My friend found a way to check the injector pump by opening up 3 injector lines and observing the flow out the lines.
So we loosened 2 injector lines and after a bunch of messing around fuel started sputtering out of the open injectors and it started to start though my friend immediately shut it down per my instruction. We tightened the injectors again and after a few sputters it started running rough than smoothly.

Yeah, you'd need to bleed your lines whenever you run out of fuel - dead lift pump included. Glad you got it fixed... On a side note, the 6.7 will self-prime. Duramax, last I checked, uses a CP-3 as well and you have to prime it.
