Default Cummins guys!!!

Hey there cummins guys...I have been a dodge guy since 07 but never have owned a cummins...I could possibly be in the market for another truck upgrade in the fall. I love the Hemi, but with this new job I might be considering a cummins. However after reading this thread I don't know if I want too...
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-c...cummins-8.html

I have 2 options, wait till the fall and get into a new 2013. OR get into a 2500 cummins while the gettings good just before the 2013s come out. I am an electrician by trade, and have never needed more then a half-ton. However with this new job, I will be hauling enclosed trailers. They are probably 9000 pounds max loaded with material. Some days it could be almost every day, some days not. Some days hauling lots of payload other days not.
SO I could probably get away with a half-ton but just want to see anyways. If I am going to upgrade to a 2500, i'm not getting it without the cummins. The thing thats getting me is the new 2013 1500s are supposed to be getting an air ride suspension. I have been reading on that too and its supposed to increase the payload to just over 3000 pounds. Seems hard to believe but that's whats being claimed. SO it would not be the payload that I am worried about, nor the tongue wait from the trailer! But that line of difference between saving fuel while pulling getting into a cummins, or just pay for the fuel using the money you paid extra for to get into the cummins.

I get whats called an aircanada deal, so at this point in time I could get into a cummins for around 55 grand (2012-Fully loaded Laramie longhorn) This is also Canadian prices. What would happen is the new company would pay me a certain price per month for me to use my truck for work. He saves on buying a company truck and I save on a personal truck. Now is it justified to get into a cummins? I have always wanted one! However from what I read on here it might not be a good option.

I realize tho too that most of those posts were on the 6.7 trucks installed in the 3rd gen rams. Now I have been chatting around with some people I know about there 4th gen models and they love them! No issues, no problems, and plenty of power. The ones driving the 2012 models said that they were running urea in their cummins and that's what makes a difference. I understood that technology was not being released until this fall. I could be wrong, but I have never owned a cummins. So I would like to hear from everyone, most especially those who are running a 4th gen ram!

Thanks in advance!

the problem with the 6.7L engines is the DPF filter in the exhaust, and the EGR. Delete those two from the engine, and the engine will no longer suffer early turbo failures or clogged intakes...

its just the nature of what the EPA is trying to do....EGR on a diesel is about the dumbest thing you can do...lets roll black soot through the turbocharger/intake! sounds like a great idea!

Seriously, ditch those and truck will be fine.

Chasis cab 4500-5500's use urea, and i have heard some rumors about the 2013's 2500-3500's using it to and it might be a good idea. The idea of pumping raw fuel into the engine during the exhaust stroke just doesnt seem right to me and is probably a good reason for some of the issues on the 6.7.

From experiance, there is no comparison to towing 9k with a Hemi and a Cummins. I have logged many miles towing my TT with a 1500 Hemi, a 2500 Hemi and a Cummins. Honestly, the 1500 will tow it better due to it lighter weight, but the 2500 will stop a helluva lot better and handle better loaded. Now towing with the Cummins, that a whole nother story. The Hemi makes its real power above 3200 rpm's, cummins 1600-1800 nice flat torque curve at full power. The Hemi will struggle on hills while the Cummins will barely flinch. If you do decide for a Hemi, get 4.10's in the axle. I loved my Hemi's, but I dont regret switching to the Cummins at all.

Thats what I thought about the urea, but one of my buddies still believes his dad puts urea in his cummins. Maybe its different in Canada?

However if I do get into a cummins and I do the deletes needed, that will most likely void the warranty correct?
Personally if it doesn't void the warranty I would be fine with that. No one around here cares about pollution, they want the power. Here in alberta we don't have to get it checked every year for environmental reports. I believe some states you do? If I remember right the only place here in canada that does it is BC, but I believe too its only if the vehicle is more then a certain time old? I could be wrong, but here I am not worried. Guys are SPEWING black smoke everywhere around here. This is not what I want, *I mean a little :P) but I just want the power!

What about those running tuners? I know no one has cracked the 11-12 Hemis...Have they cracked the 11-12 cummins? Does that help any?

Problem is I can get into a new one for just about the price of a 5.9 with the same options. As I stated I can get into one for around 55 grand. Of course I am going to wait till they come out with there "free cummins deal" which will bring that price down about 9 grand yet again. Not to mention the deals might be even better in the near future with the 13s around the corner. So to go into a Ram that does not have warranty on it, nor the new body style, for say 10 grand cheaper.

I don't know could be out on a limb here, but why would I not take that offer? They are 70 grand trucks and I can get for just over 55? I think im stupid not to take that deal.

NOW I do understand that the 5.9 seems to be the way to go for sure, not disagreeing with you there. But is it effective enough to through away that kind of a deal to get into a 5.9?

Just get a 1 ton; it's the same price and sometimes less than a 3/4 ton, and you don't have to deal with the stupid tire pressure monitoring system. Trucks are identical other than rear springs...and there are occasions that you would want the 1 ton; renting trailers for instance. I know many places that rent trailers or equipment require the 1 ton as a minimum. Just nice to have IMO.

The 6.7, currently, does not have urea injection, and anyone running it through a tank of fuel is....well it's pointless. The new trucks seem to not have hardly any problems at all; keep the exhaust brake engaged all the time and the turbo will remain clean.

Yes there are tuning options for the 11-12 Cummins, but running any programming with the stock exhaust is just asking for trouble. If you were to delete, fine, but it will kill your warranty.

my cummins doesn't know what a hill is...get on a steep grade and never have to downshift. turbos just get a little louder on the hills, but that's about it.

So I have been looking more, and went into the dealer to get hard numbers...
Found a 2012 3500 laramie, basically fully loaded crew. They brought it down to 56 grand, after freight and taxes. Which is great I think! I asked about doing the deletes, and they said they get guys who ask for removal even before they take it off the lot. Causes less problems, and unless they can prove that doing the deletes caused the problem, the warranty I guess is not void then.

I did test drive the new one and man its something spectacular! Only problem is I am fighting with the dealer on getting the insurance and disability at good cost. He refuses to let the truck go without them, although he charges me 11 grand just for that in the next 84 months. I can get a 100grand loan insurance for 50 bucks a month, verses the 300 that hes going to charge me through my regular insurance broker.

So at the moment I am looking at paying 75 bucks more every two weeks for a cummins..worth it?
