How much would it cost to get your turbo rebuilt? Can you afford to have your truck down while you ship it out and wait?

Money being no issue, I'd go with aftermarket upgrade, rebuilt, then OE stock replacement.

check ebay and such for a HE351VE

you will also need a controller for it. should be able to find one reasonably priced used... its a VGT off a newer dodge...should bolt up and includes exhaust brake function via the controller...it should improve spool times and produce more boost/lower EGT's being a VGT...

im not really looking to put an exhaust brake on the truck just thinking about upgrading if i found out if the turbo is cracked. i was thinking if it would be a good idea to upgrade to the next step up from stock or just get a new stock one? so what do you guys think?

Why do you think you need a new turbo?

If you're going to replace the turbo, the VGT turbo is something to consider. The exhaust brake is a definite bonus, at 65k my brake pads still had about 75% left on my 08 4x4. That's not the only bonus though, the spool time is next to nothing compared to the older turbos. It spools up like a VW 1.8t with the walnut sized turbo, but then it opens up and makes good power up top too (which the VW doesn't).

When I bought my 12-valve, I looked into getting a VGT turbo for it, but no dice, the controllers need the electronics on the newer trucks.

Horatio, pretty sure Fleece has a VGT controller for the HE351 for a 12v.

Well, maybe not. It's a Garrett

when i get on it you can hear alot of air moving and on my edge screen the boost gauge isnt getting as high as it was before all this started. i was reading on the cummins forum that people who want to upgrade their turbos are looking into or have put on the he351 off the 04.5 to 07 trucks and are seeing all kinds of good numbers good boost faster spool times lower egts and all that stuff. what do you guys on here think about that?

I wouldnt want to spend money on something that doesnt need replaced. If the turbo is going out, more than likely you would have a significant loss of power & black smoke. If you do suspect it is going out, take the intake off and check for play in the turbine, back and forth & left and right. Also take the boot off inbetweeen the turbo and the intercooler and check for oil deposits. If you are running advanced timing or anything, you will loose some spool up time. Same if your valve lash is out of specs or a dirty air filter.
