Question Is my Turbo broken? How to tell?

Hey guys, just bought a 12V 5.9L Cummins Dually (1998) . Got a steal on it because I beleive the turbo is shot. The truck will blow HEAPS of black smoke at a normal idle and has almost no power .

This truck was a friend of mine's and the problem occurred out of nowhere. It wasn't gradual...one day while he was driving something gave out. Does. This sound like a shot turbo? I was told from a few people that it most likely is.

If it is the turbo; should I go new or used. What are some good brands, and how to test THIS turbo to make sure that it is indeed shot.

THANKS for any help!

Nice truck. Take the intake hose off the turbo and spin it. Check the end play and check for wobble.
Whats the extension cord for? Block heater?

probably battery charger...block heater cord is under the front bumper on 2nd gens.

as for blowing heaps of black smoke at idle...sounds like you got an injector stuck open or super low pop off pressures...

or somebody just didn't know WTF they were doing and messed up timing and fuel settings on the P7100 so bad that its barely running...

turbo has nothing to do with smoke at idle..turbo only comes into play under engine load. also a blown turbo you would hear making a nasty grinding noise at all times...I've had a couple blown turbos on my truck before...its not a nice sound to hear.....

Cord is for a battery charger haha. Took the hose off and turbo spindle moves at least 1/4" back and fourth

can always swap it for a S300g (57/65/12) and a bit more fuel.
