New Cummins...now a predicament...
So a couple days ago I just traded in my 2011 1500 sport, for a new 2012 3500 cummins, laramie, crew. Gonna be pulling a 8k min utility trailer around, so this truck is definitely gonna do just that. Sorry I don't have any good pictures at the moment, that will come in time...
I have a predicament tho...
I did not have the truck detailed when I picked it up, was gonna send it in for undercoating and whatnot. Decided not to have that done. Anyways I notice that the truck was kinda loud pulling it off the lot. Never really considered anything wrong, cause I have never been in a new cummins. Well this morning heading to work the truck was just way to loud. After my half an hour commute, I look under the truck and guess what is missing? The cat is GONE. Apparently I drove it off the lot without the cat, so I have to get it installed. There was a thief around the dealership stealing cat converters! They took 5 trucks worth including mine. What I don't understand is how the dealer never caught it...
Anyways the truck is now just horribly loud, and mileage is bad. Not to mention I get a particulate filter message so I can't access my evic.
I thought about doing the filter deletes, being from Alberta I thought it was not an issue. Well apparently it is a huge issue. I cannot find a dealership that will install it, not without a written consent that I have now disallowed all vehicle warranty, and cannot sue the dealer. I COULD do it myself, but apparently if you ever take it into the dealer (They threatened) they will red flag your VIN. It also is not the case of they have to prove the filter delete did it. Basically you mess with it, the motor, trans, basically the WHOLE powertrain becomes void.
So I am at a loss at this moment. I thought it was the whole "prove the issue" but according to EVERYONE I talk to its "your VOID NO MATTER what"
I have also heard that H&S is going out of business because the lawsuits against them. How can Chrysler not let guys do this in a province that does not care?
I guess my main question to you guys with experience is what kind of fuel mileages do you get with the stock exhaust. Is doing the delete really worth risking the warranty?

Hi from calgary... This has been in the news here...
Thease Cats are in high demand because they choke up recycling the unburt flue particulet, and Im sure thier made out of plattuim...thiers a filter inside the cat as well that needs service as well.
700.00 charge from Dodge dealer in Edmonton...
Dodge will viod the warenty on thease trucks if you do a egr deleat and Cat deleate, my best advice is get your dealer to put the truck back to stock, drive until the warenty is up and than modify.
Alberta has no emisson testing, but BC has air care, so cover your tracks if you need to move out of Alberta...
I considerd a 6.7 but not Now, 2013 are going to have urea tanks on them, so you have one less expense to worry abought...

I will never move out of Alberta, I am an electrician by trade. You probably know yourself that tradesmen are never without a job here...HA...
2013s are going to have the DEF systems yes, but for those who want to modify I think its going to be a hard go. It will still cost you a little bit to put this fluid in, I have no idea how much it uses tho. I know the big rigs have been using this system for a little while now, not to mention tractors have too. It seems to work alright, but its something more you have to worry about...
Why can't the environments just leave well enough alone...? If they cared less about what is coming out of the pipes that EXACT moment, and focused more on the whole picture, their minds would be blown! Did they ever take into consideration the amount of energy needed to create a gallon of diesel vs a gallon of gasoline? OR the actual burning of the fuel? The technology needed to create DEF fluid? I kinda hope that when the 13s roll on the lot Chrysler will change their mind about warranty on the filter systems, and more on those trying to rid their trucks of DEF *Sigh* End rant.
EPA is the United Sates is the cause behind all diesel trucks running this emissons stuff on trucks and the Canadian Government fellows the United Sates and dodge, Ford, and Gm all build crap thats only sold in North America...
Basicly the Duramax, Power Stroke and CTD are built to consume more diesel so they put out less nastys out the tail pipe, THease trucks are not doing well in the oil patch beacuse thier not paying the bills when tier stuck in high idel in Regen mode..
AS for warenty, If I buy A new US. market HD RAM (booth Canadian and US. market HD RAMS are built in Mexico) and import it into Canada, Chrysler Canada says I have no warenty in Canada, or the United States...
I was dam close to buying a NEW HD ram 2500 crew cab wth the 6.7 and 6sp man, and even Dam Dam close when I priced out trucks in Greatfalls MT.
Its Messed up that 6grand CDN is the going rate per a cat ( as per global in Edmonton) and its proven that the 6.7 CTD runs better with the CAT deleat and EGR deleat.
If you modify your truck and than went to trade it at a dealership, or if I buy your truck and have to re invest in a CAT, your 56,000 investment is pissed away in two years...
Also if you don't maintain your CTD to Dodges specs, thats also casue for dodge to viod any warenty claims...
To protect what dodge (CTD) built and to protect Chryslers abillity to sell in North America, its best for them to put the CAT. back in...

It's EPA garbage, and at least in the US it's a Federal law, so it doesn't matter what your local government does about emissions testing, removing the cat/dpf/egr is illegal.
I would recommend getting the cat replaced by the dealer, and then do the deletes and DO NOT take it to the dealership without returning it to stock. They will be able to tell, but unless they're looking for it you may be ok.
I recently did an oil change on a 2012 Ram 5500 (with DEF) and it took I believe 3 full bottles of DEF to top it off. I want to say it was at 10k miles and this was the first time DEF was added.

Oh, and H&S isn't shutting down that I've seen, but they did get a stern talking to by the EPA, and they've stopped selling emissions related products for the time being.

If you ever see a tractor hard at work, whats coming out the exhaust? HORRIBLE black smoke, but apparently that is alright.
Again, its not that I removed the cat. It is the simple fact that it was stolen before I even drove it off the lot. So Dodge is gonna have to put it in either way. Apparently its a two week wait too, what I don't understand is why they can't pull it off another truck in the lot.
The problem with doing the delete even if you never take it into the dealer, that 1 time that you do have to. They "could" potentially red flag it. Meaning your warranty is void at any dealership. IS that chance worth risking warranty on a 15g motor?
It just really grinds my gears...I buy a truck that up till like 6 months ago it was ok to do it, now its taboo...
I don't see the problem here? the cat was stolen while the truck was in the dealers possession. which means: the dealer sold a truck without a cat. that is illegal and you can bring the EPA down on them...tell them to put the cat on since they sold it to you without, and if they refuse, tell them you are getting your attorney AND the government/EPA involved. might change their minds...
