Default New owner of an 09 2500 question about modifications

Just purchased a 09 2500 megacab with the cummins 6.7. There have been some modifications made to the truck, but as I bought it from a wholesaler, I do not have the history. I do know the catalytic converter and the DPF is no longer on truck. Straight pipe to the muffler. I am getting a code that the DPF filter is full and I need to go to dealer. Also says power diminished. Drove truck about 240 miles yesterday and she performed great. According to the overhead I was getting 24.5 MPG. Now, how do I figure out what else has been done, and does it sound as if the code that says power has been diminished really mean anything?

I appreciate all advice. New to the diesel, but have been a loyal Dodge owner for years.

Cheers,
Kevin

Would a smarty jr help me out? Would like to get rid of the code on the console. Also, can't imagine fuel mileage really increasing too much more. Not looking to hotrod the truck. Will be doing some hauling, but not too much weight. Maybe about 8000 pounds at a time on occasion.

Cheers,
Kevin

At one point there should have been a programmer on that truck to deal with the DPF delete. Does it have the EGR still in it? Duck underneath on the passenger's side and check the side of the transmission - there's a sensor bolted to a bracket that (normally) has hoses going to the exhaust before and after the DPF. That's a pressure differential sensor to tell if the DPF is getting clogged. Loop a hose on that sensor so it never sees different pressures and to keep it from getting contaminated.

The smarty will get rid of the light. Hopefully you never need to pass emissions (or get warranty work on the engine or transmission), as it'll cost you about $7000.

Thanks for the help. No emissions here and the truck is way out of warranty. It's an 09 with over 180K on it. Not sure about the EGR delete. Where would I look for that? I am very new to the diesel market. I appreciate all of your help.

Cheers,
Kevin

Being an 09, you have to physically remove it from the truck to do the delete.

The EGR cooler runs down the passenger side of the engine, and there's a ~2" diameter hose/pipe under a black plastic cover that runs around the front side of the valve cover, into the intake.

See the plastic cover in front of the valve cover, and that odd thing with cables to the left of it? That's the EGR stuff.

If it's been deleted, it'll look more like this:

Oh, and just because there is no emissions testing, does not mean it isn't a violation of federal emissions laws. Don't ever **** off a DOT or EPA worker.

Thanks for the help. Mine looks like the first picture. What difference will I see if it is deleted?

Is there a program on it currently? Does it feel like a stock truck, or does it move out pretty good? A little (or a lot) of black out of the pipe?

It could also have sims, but that's old school 07 stuff there. If you were to follow the wiring harness down the frame rail you would find the connections for the DPF sensors and EGT sensor; if the ends are empty, it had (maybe has) a program on it, but if they are terminated with basically a plug that has a wire loop on it, it's got sims.

Best bet is a program, and rip that EGR and cooler crap off, it's horrible. This is your engine with EGR:

All of that black crap is being injected into your intake; tell me that's good for it.

Yup. All that carbon buildup is bad for your engine. Carbon is a microscopic abrasive, and you're injecting it back into your engine. It gets down into your oil as well, causing even more wear.

It took me 12 bottles of throttle body cleaner to get my intake clean.

Yeah, I had one...

My wife and I had a kid, her lease ran out on her car so instead of getting a loan while she wasn't working, we sold my truck and paid cash for an 07 caravan and then bought and built my 12-valve.

I do miss that truck, but I'm not sure I'd get another EPA truck at this time. I'm going to get another 4wd, but at this time I'm not sure if I'm going to just get a donor truck and swap my engine/trans over, or buy another runner and just hope for the best. An 02 6-speed 3500 4x4 would be swell.
