Default idle is running 3-600 over what it should

Hello everyone,

I need some help diagnosing my idle problem. I have a 06 dodge diesel megacab w/ 94 k miles. as of recent my idel has been running 3-600 rpm over normal. I can idle down the road at a pretty good clip with out touching the fuel pedal.

Any thoughts on what may be the problem?

Many thanks!

Cracked fuel injector? Are you running a programmer? Are you the original owner?

Yes I am the original owner. The truck is bone stock never had anything done to it.

I tried diagnosing it a little more last night and the symptoms are as follows-

1. In neautral it idles at approximately 6-700 rpms, which seems normal.
2. When I shift it into drive, auto tranny, it wants to take off on me. The truck will idle down the road at 6-8 mph with out touching the fuel pedal. I have to stand on the brakes to keep it stopped.
3. The shifting of the tranny seems to be premature, as in shifting too early.

Any thoughts?

sounds like it's time for a new torque converter...

good excuse to get a built TC like a RevMax.

there are two parts in the TC that are problematic in those common rail transmissions that cause those exact symptoms. first being the lockup apply piston, and second being the stator sprag. 9/10 times its a bad stator sprag.

replace the torque converter and you should be golden

Some people will throw out ideas of it being a bad APPS, but if it was a bad APPS, it would happen ALL the time, not just in gear, and it would immediately throw a CEL and give dead pedal.

Thanks so much for the advise.

Is it common for these to go out?

Is the stock TC's junk?

The stock ones are not very durable. aftermarket like a revmax, suncoast, or DTT would be your best choice for a replacement. They should last the life of the truck.

not a bad idea to do a billet input shaft, billet output shaft, and a valve body as well (basically build the whole transmission) then you can throw a programmer on there and get some power out of the truck
