99 cummins acceleration questions
Im looking into buying a 99 cummins w/ a auto trans. Ive never driven a auto diesel before and have a question about how it drives. .
So took it for a test drive and it seems like the rpms go way to high before any real acceleration happens. For example. Dealer had it parked on a incline. When i went ti take off i was expecting it to be like my ram 1500, give it a little bit of gas and you start to go, instead the rpms went to around 2k before any real movement happened. While driving around 35 mph and going full throttle, it kicks down, rpms go way up but it doesnt really set you back in the seat like my 1500 ram does. Im pretty sure my gaser will out accelerate this truck. Asking around ive been told thats how they are, been told thats its the converter, and was told the trannys shot.
Ive seen 2gen cummins rams take off from a dead stop and murder the tires, this thing wont, just lots of noise .
Any insight is appreciated as im looking to buy a cummins in the next week or so

definitely doesn't sound right...
stock 2nd gens are gutless, but not that gutless.
sounds like they had a tuner on it without building the trans first and burned up the converter.
Then they traded it in because they didn't want to buy a new trans.

Its not all stock, edge programing, cf charge pipe going to the intake (not sure on diam.) Massive CAI, and exhaust.
Was also told some of the 24v blocks had issues with cracking, is there a way to identify the bad block if this is a issue?

something like 1% or less of the 53 blocks had a casting flaw that made it easy for the engine block to crack in the water jacket on the passenger side above the freeze plugs.
not all 53 blocks have this flaw so not all crack. one of the many casts shifted causing the thin spot in the block. there were a lot of 53 casts and a lot of 53 blocks made. only 1 of the casts produced blocks with the flaws, so the flaw only exists on a small number of the blocks. some 55 blocks and some storm blocks have also had the cracking issue in the same spot.
block numbers can be found on either the drivers or passengers side of the block around the center just above the oil pan. it will either be stamped or raised numbering about 1" tall numbers all by themselves.

The rule about buying a modified vehicle applies: You are inheriting someone else's problem.
If you can get the price low enough to throw a $5k transmission/rebuild at it, go for it. If they want top dollar, walk.
