Start Up Issues 99 Cummins???
I'm having problems trouble shooting start up issues with my 99 RAM 2500. About 6 months ago, it started not starting all of the time when the key was turned. Second or third attempt would then get her running. It progressed to requiring me to hold the column shift lever up and turn the key to crank it over. Now that doesn't work either and the fuel pump doesn't charge up like it should.
All fuses appear to be OK. I checked the shift linkage to make sure the transmission was fully in park (won't start in neutral either) by loosening the linkage and tapping the shift lever on the tranny. I pulled the engine starter motor relay and checked for continuity and resistance and it seems alright.
When I turn the key the dash lights all light up and then go out when the Cummins is supposed to be ready. When I try to start it there is a faint click under the dash, the dash lights go out until I release the key back to run.
I have the Haynes book but can't decide if the Neutral Safety Switch has failed, if a failure in the Starter relay would also shut down the fuel pump or if it something else under the dash causing the click and failure to run. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
