10-ply is load range E. My '98 came with load D from the factory, it's also what I have on since I don't do a great deal of hauling. I looked up the '06s on TireRack, they didn't have any listings so i looked at '05s, looks like they all came with load E from the factory. I wouldn't put anything less than that on the truck. It takes a healthy tire to support the weight of a Cummins.

you can put anything from a 6 ply on up. on a 6 ply you might have to run alittle more air. If you do alot of towing it would be better for 8 to ten.

I have an 02 diesel and mine came with 10 ply's on it. I ran 8 ply's once but I was towing so much that they didn't last long. If you are not towing alot then I think you would be ok with 8 ply. I would recommend that you go with nothing less then an 8 though. The ply of the tire only really becomes important when you are towing. 8 ply or 10 doesnt make that much difference as far as tire wear for normal driving. I will just say that the diesel's are heavy and they do like tires so beware. I average about 30000 to 35000 miles to a set of tires. I tow my farm tractor alot and I also pull a 33 foot pull behind camper and if you keep the air right and keep them rotated you will be ok.
