Where did you read that it was lower then ford or chevy? I have neer heard that. Now if you compare a 3/4 ton to a 1 ton there usually is some difference. My 2002 3/4 ton with a Dana 80 rear axle and Dana 60 front axle is rated to tow 13,400, that is with a manual trans. I have always seen stats that show the Dodge has about a 1000 lbs higher towing capacity. Also you need to compare year for year. Dont compare a 2000 Dodge to a 2006 Ford or Chevy.

I'm looking at 2006 Dodge, Ford , and Chevy brochures. I am looking at the 1 ton trucks. Dodge 3500 4x4 Mega Cab Short Box single rear wheel maximum payload is 2510 lbs. Ford F350 4x4 Crew Cab Short Box single rear wheel maximum payload is 4100 lbs. I don't have the Chevy brochure but I know it is about the same as the Ford. Towing capacities are all very close at around 15400 lbs. I am planning on buying a new diesel truck. I would like to have a high payload capacity. I currently have a 1999 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab Short Box V-10 and it's payload capacity is 3000 lbs. The payload capacity on the Quad Cab Duallys is 4770 lbs however I do not want dual rear wheels. Why is the Dodge 1600 lbs. less? That is a big difference.

Sorry I miss understood you. I was thinking towing capacities. Either way I will haul anything in my dodge that they will haul in theirs. I actually hauled a a series 60 detroit engine which goes in a tractor trailer and weighs about 2600 lbs. in the bed of my 3/4 ton. And yes it was a complete engine. So I will haul whatever you want to put on it or in it.

I don't have an answer Lupo, but I can tell you that I've had the exact same question. I've been poring over the brochure also, and the payload ratings are embarassingly low. I just love the Dodge, so I'm trying not to let that sway my decision. And I also have to agree with Drew. But, I do think Dodge needs to get their head in the game and play along.
Maybe the numbers on the actual truck (glovebox, door, manual..whatever) tell a different story? Is it just a brochure thing?

Who rates a trucks towing and hauling capacities?
The manufacturer does.
The ratings in the heavy duty truck market are completely unregulated and subject to whatever the manufacturer wants to put.
Look at Ford SD's (sorry, that's where my knowledge is) from 99 - 04. What changed in those trucks that increased it's load or towing capacity? Absolutely nothing! But what did their numbers do in those years? They climbed steadily higher.
You have to take the manufactuers numbers with a grain of salt. They are mostly over-inflated.

According to 8 Lug magazine pg 102. The 2006 Dodge mega cab SRW 2500 has a payload capacity of 5200 lbs, max gross vehicle weight rating of 12,200, maximum tow capacity of16,300, and max gross combined weight rating of 23,000!!?!?!?!?
