Default Auto or Manual?

I'm looking for an 94-00 dodge 2500 diesel and I'm seeing alot of them in automatics and i hear the horror stories and myself having to rebuild my own 2001 1500. I've heard some people say if you put an after market cooler and keep it flushed it won't give you any problems . I will be pulling 25ft travel trailer. I haven't had much luck in finding a 2500 in a standard tranny. Would I be better off just going and getting an automatic or wait till a manual tranny come along??? p.s. I also heard a rumor about losing fifth gear in the five speeds is that true?

I heard the same stories about the auto trannys (in general, not just Dodge) and I've always had a manual so I bought a 6 speed. They are hard to find though compared to the autos. I am in florida and I had to go to maine to get what I wanted (well, I was visiting family too). I also couldn't find a manual 2500 so I ended up with a 3500 single wheel base. The 3500 is not a bad way to go, especially if you tow often.

it all depends on what you are going to do.

I like the stick just cause I like to bang my own gears. but if you dont like the idea of doing that the auto is a good unit.

o k heres my 2 cents i have a 5 speed brother has 2 auto's i pull a real heavy trailer gwr of 24000 and have had it at 25000 ops i overloaded it haha but bro pulls a 25 ft goose neck rated at 14000 for a living plus he has a 35ft fith wheel camper aprox 12500lbs and he put a bd tow loc on his tranny to keep the convetor locked up that keeps the heat down he has put 170,000 miles on it with no problem and no extra tranny cooler the other truck has about same milage and asfar as we can tell it has the factory tranny in it(just bout it for a back up and play toy) i have had to put a clutch in my truck not cause of use cause of to much power i destoryed the pressure plate cause of my power up grades i havenet had my truck long but i have put 40,000 miles on it now for a total of 110,000 miles so with what i have put here i dont see a diffrence in the sticks or autos just the point that with power add ons to motor expect to beef up the clutch or tranny depending on wheither its a stick or auto (mine is a 01 bros work horse is a 00 and the newly purchace is a 01.5 model
