06 QC 2500 4x4 3.73's, drew's brew, first tank 576 miles overhead said 22. 3. hand calculated 20.5.

 

Just put my Drews Brew in and filled the tank ALLLLLL the way up. The lady thought the pump was broke as it took me 15-20 minutes to get all the foam out and see fuel in the neck.

My 1st run was on secondary roads. 5th and 6th gear at 45-60 mph. A few up and down hills it was a loop. Down the CT river side of NH and then back up the VT side back to home. Overhead says 23 MPG

It seems 1750-1950 yields the best MPG in 6th. Sure ain't going to get pretty at 70 and god forbid what 75 MPH will get me. Go slower than 70 and you might get killed by a big truck coming up on your butt. and will get many "looks" for holding up traffic. Even 65 MPH will be sucking some fuel I bet.

I need to find a cheep fix to add gear. Any way to swap out the 6th gear in the transmission for a higher ratio?

Not enough room to change the differential or so I hear... a Splitter is big money and frankly is not as reliable as a gear swap. I know the 5th in my VW is an EASY swap and is done all the time .. they sell a kit with 2 different increases.

This truck NEEDS higher gears!

If the MPG gets better over time it will not hurt as bad, but I keep looking for one more gear! I keep thinking I am in 4th in my old truck...

This tank of fuel will be my 1st real confirmed true MPG vs computer. I will track the MPG to see if it increases. I just hit 500+ miles so the trailer will go on for a few runs up my local LONG hill. Time to get her all nice n seated and polished inside.

 

John, if you have the g56 tranny I doubt there is anything out there right now to do an internal gear swap, nothing ever existed for the NV5600 I have. the only way to get lower RPM's is in the form of an aux. tranny from U.S. gear or gear vendors.

 

WOW you guy's are bumming me out.

I've got a 98 24 valve turbo Ram with a little over 100k on it. The only real modification I've done to it was to put a K&N AIR intake system on it a year or so ago. My mileage was about 14 mpg or so up until last week when I switched tires. I had stock 16" rims with 245's on it, but a friend of mine sold me his old ( new ) 17" rims with 265's and now I only get about 12-13 mpg. I live in the city so my driving is mixed but I guess you could say it is primarily city.

What am I doing wrong ? You guy's all seem to be averaging around 17 + !!

How can I improve my mpg ?

I'm now in the market for a new exhaust since my tailpipe JUST rotted out of the muffler. Any recomendations there?

check your lift pump. . .bet the pressure is low. this has actualy increased fuel mileage in all 24 valves.

What is a lift pump and where is it located? How do I check / change the pressure?

I know you have a 98, if you have the 12 valve 98 then you have nothing to worry about since the lift pump is mechanical, on the 24 valves the lift pump is on the back side of the fuel filter canister and a 0-30 psi gage can be used to monitor the pressure.

16 oz of Power Service Diesel in the gray bottle, and 8 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank at each fill up.

I own a 2006 4x4 Quad Cab 3500 Dodge Ram with 13,500 miles
My hand calculated mileage is around 13.5, my computer syas I am getting 15.5.
Currently I am using the stock program. I have 315/70/R17 offroad tires and a K&N air filter
I am not using any fuel additives but would like to learn more about this.

I think I have a 3.73 axle ratio but can't prove it. There is no sticker under the hood to confirm this, I'll see if I can decipher the vin #.
At approx. 6,000 miles and getting what I consider to be poor fuel economy I hooked up a superchip flashpaq for a long trip to Colorado. I wanted to look at two things. One to see if by using the superchip performance program I could improve my fuel economy and second to recalibrate the speedometer and odometer to the larger tire size. I have always had a large difference in what my computer said my fuel economy was and what I actually measured even though the "pinion factor"was adjusted at the dealer for the larger tires, I was told they could only go up to 285 or 295. The superchip program did help with the fuel economy a little but didn't change the discrepancy between the computer and actual measured mileage. With the superchip program my computer read 21-22mpg(which sounds pretty good) my actual was around 15-16, this was all highway miles under or just at 70mph. On the trip I checked my odometer reading with the highway mile markers and my speed with the occasional radar with speed readout. Both seemed accurate. I am a loss as to what to do to get my fuel economy into the expected range. I also don't understand the huge difference between what my computer reads and my actual checked mileage. I know my large tires will affect my mileage but I didn't expect this much of a dropp off. Any and all comments, suggestions, questions will be appreciated.
