Lets play the MPH game

here is how you play it.
write down your current mileage, mine happens to be 32422, then turn your ignition to run, but do not start, push and hold the trip button and your total hours will come up after a few seconds, mine is 820hrs.
this gives me a total of 39.5mph
so what do you have???
edit: dont confuse this with the hour meter on the overhead console, that one is resetable and runs even when the engine is not. the hour meter you are accessing is the time the engine has run which is kept in the ECM.

Drew,
Am I doing something wrong????? I followed the instructions as written, did it both ways, on trip and total miles, I held the button for approx 30-45 seconds and nothing came up. All I was able to do was reset the trip register. But, found something strange..... I held the button and then turned the key to the run position and got a "CHEC" message on the odometer and then my guages did something like a self test where they all started at nothing and worked themselves to pegged. I would like to know how to get my total hours but your instructions did not work. Oh, by the way I have an '01 CTD, 4x4, quadcab.

I thought the 98.5-02 second gens would be able to display it the same way the 3rd gens could, but aparently after a little research you need a scan tool to get the number.
but what you did was a dash test, and that test also applies to the 3rd gens in how to do it.

41288 miles 1168 hours that equals 35.45 mph.
jagj52 when i was looking for my hours i did the same thing you were talking about, i wasn't sure what was going on either. then finally i kept trying it and the hours came up. don't push the button until you have the key in the on position.
