Default Down Pipe Position?

OK,
I got a box of dress up goodies from Genos garage last week (billet oil cap, door locks, condenser guard, etc.) cool stuff and I thought pretty cheap as well. I also got a chromed down pipe that replaces the plastic pipe between the air box and the turbo. Looks cool and I get a little more of the turbo whistle.

1st I noticed about 2psi drop at cruising speeds but also noticed some eradic boost pressures.

When I get into it the psi climb normally to about 30 then all of a sudden it jumps to 40+. Now I normally see 40+ at times but the hesitation is whats buggin me.

Anyway the real question is when I took the fact. pipe off I didnt note which end is up. So if anyone has an extra minute or if your going to be under the hood today anyways check the stock down pipe for me would ya?. There are 2 arrows pointing to one end and 1 arrow pointing to the other. Which one gos up??[&:]

Thanks

Make sure there is not an obstruction somewhere between the turbo compressor outlet and the entrance to the aftercooler. Anything lodged in there could be blocking flow to the intake manifold. That situation I could see a pressure build up, though it would have to be a tennis ball size obstruction.lol. Make sure there was no plastic cellophane that you didn't catch that could have been sucked in through the compressor when you added your mods. Where is the gauge you're monitoring, hooked up to? You're saying that your factory turbocharger is hitting 40 psi of boost?????????????? Is this an upgraded turbo? We need more info.

Good luck.

Sorry, its an '06.

The Pressure monitor is tapped in at the intake manifold and I do see about 42psi when I really get on it.

I also run the QuadZ XZT along with the BDTD however even when I run it stock (when I have to take in to the dealer) I can still can get upwards of 34-38 psi. and thats with a free flow drop in filter, cat back 5" MBRP exhaust and flow through Aero Turbine resinator.

And as far as the positioning I got ahold of the dealer and was told the 2 arrows point down. Now I thought the same thing you prob are and that was does he really know but I figured it would be a 50/50 either way [8D] so I went with it and all is well.

Thinking back I should've taken the silencer ring out since I was right there but I guess thatll be another day

And as far as an obstruction I think it would take more like a softball!

BlackRam69, what do think of the aero turbine so far? I have the 4040xl with the resonator, I'm guessing u have the same one. So far I like mine, and everyone that hears it says that it sounds good. I've come to realize that is sounds louder than what I hear inside the truck (which is barely nothing). I got on it hard the other day while driving by those concrete barriars that are used for road construction, I had all 4 windows down, and could hear it good, OH YEAH, it makes some noise, sounds good. Anyways, I just wanted to see what you thought of yours.

The Aero Turbine you say?

Yep, I got the 5050xl (5" exhuast) and noticed the diff immediately. The sound (outside) is just as throaty as the MBRP free flow muff was but on the inside....ahhhhh!

Now I hear more of the CTD and the turbo and (alot) less of the exhuast. It really makes those long trips so much more pleasent.

As far as there claimed increase in mileage..... I'm still on the fence about that. Lokking back I would have just threw the (4040xl) Aero on the OEM 4" and prob been pleased as punch.

I cant say enough about the decrease in the interior noise. If anyone is out there looking to mod the exhuast I suggest you really think about how you use your truck.

If you frequently drive alot (around hour #1 is when my head started to throb, 2-3 hours and I couldnt wait to get out of the truck! [sm=outcold.gif]) I would say stay away from those replacement exhuasts (except for duals, those are awseome) and just replace the muff with the Aero. If the drive is a short commute everyday I dont think it would bother me.

Of course you could always turn up the radio! [sm=icon_rock.gif]

You lost me a bit here.

With the larger exhaust ( 4 or 5 inch ) are you saying that the interior noise is MORE than stock? Is it the exhaust that you are hearing, or the turbo?

Sorry for the confusion, I just want to make sure that I understand you since I'm getting ready to replace my exhaust very soon and I want to make sure that i make the most informed decision that I can. I've got a thread going on about it now ( exhaust reccomendations ). Check it out when you get the chance. Any help at all is appreciated.

Thanks ...

From the factory my 06 came with 4" front to back. I put an alcheap free flow, and didn't like the sound at all. I decided to go with the aero turbine 4040xl, (which is for 4", and it has a built in resonator). The sound is much more pleasant, and is a little louder than stock in the cab, but not bad at all, honestly, I can still hear the engine and turbo over it at cruising. Now, on the outside, it is louder. The company suggest that the muffler be mounted as close to the turbo as possible, and that these mufflers can be stacked. So, I'm thinking of losing the cat, buying another aero turbine 4040xl, and mounting them in line in place of the cat. I wanna lose the cat, but I hear that the noise is terrible without it.
