My self I would check the door to see when it was made and how long ago it was, by doing this I did my first change at 1150 miles. I should of done it sooner but it took a few days before my head could get out of the clouds.

The reason I say this is mine was an early 06 and had been sitting some place for 6 months and 35 miles so I did not want to take a chance of how good the oil was and wait for 6000 miles before I changed it. I figured it was cheap insurance to be safe and not sorry and have a crappy CTD.

Col,

Cummins has said not use syn oil until the engine has at least 20,000 miles on it. This allows the engine to get broke-in 100%. Now if you have towed/hauled heavy loads for a minium of 10,000 miles then you could get by changing over to syn oil with out to many problems.

My 2 cents is 3000 miles, Only because it took me that long to make up my mind on what oil and filter to use. And boy do I have to get used to seeing black oil even after you change it.[:@] I guess it is up to you, What ever makes you fell better. Oil is chep compared to engine work.....

20k for Syn sounds like good advice. I checked my engine and truck were assembled in Jun 06. Guess I can wait until sometime between 3 and 3.5k. Any other suggestions or alternatives? Btw, just filled up last night and started Drew's brew. Can't wait to see the results.

I used to do early oil chages for the first go around. Now I do them when the owners manual states. My manual said heavy service called for 7500 mile intervals. I had mine changed yesterday at 7266 miles (2 months old). I did it early because next week I will be over 7500 and I am anul about it.

Ya MTRAM, I have read a ton on running this oil and that for 12k to 20k miles and taking oil sample's ect. Me "Why" when you can change your oil like the people that make the engine say. I know I know, This oil is this and that and my oil sample said this and that. I do not wont to worry about it. I'am going to do what the Engineer's that make and design engine's say. Run a good oil and filter, Change it at or before they recomend and you do not have to worry about it, What if your oil sample comes back BAD, It's to late thin, the damage is done................. And of course change the air and fuel filter's. I really keep a close eye of my air filter.

I Guess it who You Talk With ? I Spoke with My Dealer also ,He Said that is a old wise tale ! The Newer Engines Do Not Need a Break In For Syn Oil ? My 2 cents is This , I run a fleet of Trucks for years (stockyards) Most Dodge i Think We have two fords On Right Now , ALL The Trucks Where Bought New ! Ran About 1,000 Miles on Them Droped The Crapy Min Oil Out Of Them And Filled Up With New Long Rider Oil.
I Have Never had any Probs So Far ? I Have Been Running Hard For Years This Way ! Long Rider has Said To Wait 1000,2000 Before The New Oil , But Says it Would Not Hurt The Engine in any way ! But If it Started To Use oil to Run Min Oil again For a 1,000 Miles To Stop Any Oil Use ! But With That Said i Have Done This for Years Many New Trucks ! And Have Never had any prob as of date ,Also Back In The 80s
I Used Amsoil That was All There Was Back Then ! Dam i'm Getting Old !! And Gents my Trucks are Running over 200,000 miles With Out a Hick Up ! No Oil Use, Change Oil Every 10,000 miles Run donaldson Filters And K&N Some Times Amsoil ! No Diff i Can See

Will Guys Thats my Long Winded Story !
