Default Fuel Pressure question...

Hello ya'll!

I just recently purchased a 1999 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Short Bed 2500 4x4 Cummins with a 5 spd.
It has 101,500 on the clock and a few upgrades including:
-Edge programmer
-4inch Banks Exhaust- no muffler
-5 inch Skyjacker lift
-35x12.50x16.5 BFG A/T's with Weld wheels
-cold air intake and filter
-pilar guages with Pyro temp, Turbo Boost, and fuel pressure.

When I bought the truck, I bought it from the original owner who ordered it new and took great care of this little beast! He said he had the FULL Banks turbo kit and had issues with the inj. pump and lift pump. Therefore, he removed this kit and went back to stock but left the exhaust. This engine is on its second inj. pump and 3rd lift pump. He was telling me that when pulling a trailer make sure to keep an eye on the fuel pressure guage and not to let it go below 7 psi. It should stay at what you start with when NOT pulling a trailer, 13-15 psi.

Ok my question is:
What is a SAFE range it should vary from? I drive around town alot and have watched that guage drop from 15 to under 10 with around town driving and sit steady at 11 on the hiway at 10 lbs of boost. I dont really have the extra $2500 for a inj. pump sitting around so any help would be great!

If this question is too vauge, please let me know and I can get into more detail!

well there is alot of diffrent wnsers out there some say if its above 5 psi its good some say 8 psi and ive heard up to 10 psi. so right now you should be fine .if your worried put a back up pump on it like bd deisel offers or bully dog or spend a few bucks and put a fass system on it and forget it! but on the other hand there is one flaw here the vp44 is 1/2 manual and 1/2 computer so sooner or later the ip will die but if you keep it suppied with 8 to 10 psi maybe it will live a long happy life for you

Ok. I am going to play the dumb card here and ask what is a fass system?

What is the average life of a Injector Pump on one of these? This one was replaced at about 80 k.

I've got 160k on the original VP44. I don't know what the average life is on a well maintained VP44 and I don't think too many people do. It seems most of the VP44's fail after a lift pump issue. The VP44 probably would have stayed running for a long time if the lift pump had not killed it. So there are a lot of premature VP44 failures out there. I'm sure there are very little that have just plain worn out from regular use.

My 1st lift pump failed at 144k. I now have the piece of crap Carter in tank pump and it only delivers about 5-6psi when towing at 70 MPH. There are a lot of different stories on how much PSI you should have with which ever pump. If I had know better at the time, I would have replaced the lift pump with a FASS.

I had the 2005 lift pump system put in and sometimes it drops down to 4 or less on occasion. But I average 6-7. The new system is designed by volume I guess so it looks like I am way low. All my shops here told me that it should run between 13-15 and not much less. The new upgrade is just a temporary fix and should not drop below 7 I guess. The FASS is what I am going to get put in hopefully soon. I hear a lot of reports that you will not have to change the lift for many many years. You might want to find out what lift pump he had put in, maybe he converted it to what I have in my truck (2005 system) and thats why it reads low. Oh yeah "CowboyBob"- it's never to late to change!

I have no input to provide on the pressure issue, other than no pressure is no good...

why not put one of these in there?
http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/de..._id=09-003-001

from what they say it pumps equally as good as a FASS setup and at 1/2 the price, is a much better deal.

It's on my list of things to do...
