Dramatic loss of power
I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on determining the problem.
1999 RAM 2500 4x4 turbo diesel, I'm the original owner.
Loss of power occurred overnight.
Engine starts immediately, idles perfectly, runs smoothly at high RPM in neutral, and smoothly on the road at higher speeds. Any hill causes rapid decelleration. However, once in third gear and higher, there is only initial power and then even after putting the pedal to the floor...nothing; no acceleration at all, or hesitancy, just nothing.
There are no codes reported on the OBDII. Sensor system is fully operational.
As per the shop manual: What I've checked...The wastegate actuator on the turbo operates per spec., the Carter lift pump operates per spec, there are no fuel leaks in the lines between injectors to the fuel tank, fuel and air filters are brand new. All fluid levels were normal the day the problem surfaced.
Dodge dealership told me it was a slipping clutch and replaced it. No change; so it wasn't the clutch.
I can't find, or hear any evidence of a blown head gasket. The exhaust smoke appears normal. I have not had the fuel pressure checked on the high pressure fuel injection pump yet, but feel if it was working improperly the computer would note a problem between Accelerator Position Sensor signal and amount of fuel the computer is requiring of the engine. I have not checked the fuel module's filter in the tank yet.
Smooth running operation leads me to believe the injectors aren't clogged.
I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

he's already swapped the fuel filter and presumably drained the water out of it. do you have a boost guage? sounds to me like your not building boost. do you hear any whinning when the turbo is kicked in? as in maybe you have a blown hose or inner cooler?
Steve,
your right, I did swap the fuel filter and drain the water (there was none). Boost gauge! that's a great idea. I've got to admit, I don't think it's whining like it normally did. I'll also check the hose and inner cooler for leaks. Like everyone else, I'm trying hard to keep from replacing the injector pump ($). I just find it hard to believe it's faulty. the previous lift pump produced pressure as per spec. I replaced it because it's six years old and figured with Carter lift pump's bad reputation it was gonna quit me sooner than later and kill my injector pump. Low boost pressure makes sense. that'd explain why the engine runs perfectly with no burps, shudders, or any other sign....just a dead accelerator at mid and top end.
thanks!!! I'll let you know how it turns out.

Also, I've seen plugged mufflers causing the same problem, might be why your not hearing any hissing from the intake
