Default What kind of truck stop/fuel station to look for when traveling, & need fuel ?

howdy..newbe with a diesel, but not to the automotive field.. I will be going on a 1400 mile trip in a day , and was wondering what kind of advice some of you "Pro's" could give. What kind of fuel station or truck stop do you look for when you need diesel fuel.....what do you avoid when going over the road. I've heard horror stories about getting diesel fuel with water in the tank..I do carry an extra fuel filter and tools to install it..plus bottles of PSD & 911 etc....my trip will take me past Flying J , & pilot ,Holiday gas stations..phillips 66 etc...thanks in advance..

I go to Flying J, but I'm beginning to become UNIMPRESSED with the fuel. No water or anything, just that I've noticed I get 2-3 MPG better if I use Texaco or posssibly Chevron.

General rule about truck stops. If you see 2 or 3 in the same area, look for the one with the MOST trucks. Usually better food and fuel.

Flying J, Pilot, and Petro are my personal faves. I stay away from most independents when it comes to fuel. Don't know where it comes from and am concerned about fuel quality issues.

I usually fill up at petro, flying j, and nelsons distributing fuel stations. I have never ran into fuel problems. That being said, we'll see what happens when I fill up tomarrow.

I would say any high volume dealer would be fine such as the Flying "J" ect. I stay away from the Mom & Pop store's on the back roads. I open up the water/fuel seperator every 2 or 3 tanks of fuel just to make sure no water is present. I never have had my water in fuel light come. I think maybe draining the separator must help, It can't hurt for sure..........

I went from north TX to middle of WY, and I used Flying J and a Pilot. No issues, I have always been told anywhere they have a hight trun over rate ( sell lots of fuel) you should be ok.

any high volume dealer, since they have such a high turn over with the fuel you have a lower chance of getting a bad tank.

disclaimer !!
the truck stop with the most trucks , doesnt neccessarily have the best fuel ,or food .
It is usually the one with the best /easiest PARKING/ ACCESS..

what realy pisses me off when I filling up is at the quick trip I go to that just so happens to be a high volume supplier had 4 diesel pumps at the front island, these diesel pumps also have regular gas as well. all the other 50 pumps are open and some jack hole in a gas burner just has to pull infront of me to fill up his car at the only open diesel pump.

I can understand larger package vans and bread trucks that run on gas pulling to these pumps, it is easier to get to them, however, I'm waiting in line for that pump since it has diesel, and this a$$clown could go to any other pump but instead goes out of his way to cut me off to get to that pump[:@]

I've made a request that those 4 particular pumps despence diesel only for us smaller oil burners, I doubt it will happen since there are 20 high volume diesel pumps in the back for OTR trucks.
