Default Ball Joints

Just got off the phone with the dealership and they mentioned that both my upper and lower ball joints on both sides are junk. Quoted $1,300 to perform work with factory parts. Truck has 49,000 miles on it!!! Not covered by warranty. Anyone else have this issue and what did you do? Any help would be appreciated.

I just had my truck (04.5) done at 51,000 miles. My dealership replaced all 4 with MOOG greasable units for right at $1000. That is an upgrade over stock replacements, so it sounds like your dealer is way high. Ask them for a breakdown on the parts and the labor. I bet they are charging you a to on labor.

Suspension components are only covered by the 3yr/36k bumper to bumper warranty. The 7/70 powertrain warranty does not extend to ball joints either.

On the phone again with dealership and they now say that Dodge has an acceptable play range of up to .090 of an inch. Mine are currently .032 for tops and .055 for the bottoms. So they changed their mind and now say they are fine.

They did have to change my front drivers side u-joint which is covered under the powertrain with a $100 deductible.

The main reason I brought it in was that I was experiencing a clunking noise in the drivers side front at lower speeds and turns. Had went under and looked around and found the u-joint on the drivers side was sloppy. I told the dealer this and they checked out the truck and told me I needed ball joints. They didn't even check the u-joints in the begining. Only checked the u-joint after I told them to check it again.

Now I have to fight with them regarding a rust bubble that is forming over the passenger rear wheel well. 49,000 miles and on the road only 2 years and rust is forming under the paint.

Thanks for your input.

I believe the cummins motor has a 5/100,000 (at least on 06's), but again no help for ball joints.

As for rust, you have to prove the rust started from the inside going out, not the other way around. Hopefully they will just be cool and warrenty it for you.

The bubble hasn't burst yet. I would hope that would be enough proof for DC. No sign of rust, just a bubble the size of a quarter.
