About to go over to ralphs muffler in town, said they would install it for $50. What's the optimum location for these things? Closer to the engine or further away?

loose the cat and replace it with the aero. keep the cat in the garage in case you ever need it. I also recommend going to a straight true muffler to replace the stocker. the 2 mufflers on there have proven to be an awesome setup. I Cant comment on the aero by itself though... someone else will have to chime in on that.

I am running the Areo by itself and I couldn't be happier. I had it mounted back wher ethe existing muffler once hung and the factory resonator ( which I THOUGHT was a cat .... LOL ) was replaced with a straight pipe. So basicaly, I'm running from the turbo, through a straight pipe, through a resonated Aero, and finally out through the tail. I absolutely love it !!

MAKE SURE when you have it mounted that they mount it the right way !!! The rings on the Aero should be to the REAR of the truck, not towards the front !!

I started thinking about the location on this muffler... if it needs flow to get going so to speak, (help with low end) wouldnt it make sense to place it right after the turbo? lets say you have it towards the rear, 4" exhaust throughout, the amount of air that has to flow to fill the exhaust to the aero once you stomp on it could affect throttle response (as if it wasnt slow enough already) I guess you'd have to play with it to know for sure but from the design of it, I think it's better to have it right off the turbo.

Yeah, I'm no engineer so I have no clue. Loosing the resonator was an after thought after the Aero was pretty much tacked in. I honestly have no clue if the air comming right out of the turbo has any more pressure from it than it does a little further down the line.

Works for ME, and it works for you ..... win win all the way around !!

Pressure is determined by restriction to flow. So if your runnin mandrel bends and the same size pipe, pressure should be equal from the turbo back to the muffler. But then again you mount the exhaust brake as close to the engine as possible

AERO TURBINE Installed! Here's the review... - 11/21/2006 9:48:19 PM

Well, I got the Aero Turbine installed last thursday and have put a few days driving on it. A local muffler shop actually kept the muffler in stock and had installed lots of them on other CTDs. They cut the cat n' stock muffler off and installed the muffler towards the front of the vehilce like a foot or so from where the down-pipe comes down off the turbo. He said that Aero instructed him to install them there for superior performance and MPG, but who knows.

First impressions was I liked the sound but a bit too loud at first but I've gotten used to it now and REALLY love it now. I find that I had a heavy foot for about a 1/4 tank of diesel cuz I wanted to hear my CTD really rip! Its actually pretty quiet at normal driving levels in town (25-45 MPH) and at cruising speed (65-70 MPH). There isnt that distinct "drone" until about 80 MPH and even then its not too bad.

As far as performance, the turbo spools up it seems instantly now which really improved drive-ability...especially with in-town driving. Under hard acceleration, the bottom end power seemed to be a little better actually with really no gain at the mid-range but it really rips on acceleration from 65-100 MPH. Overall, the power seemed a lot smoother with the exhaust working in conjunction with my other mods which is really nice. Before the exhaust, the Edge made the power to have somewhat of a "light-switch" feeling, now with the exhaust its just a steady HARD pull

As far as mileage goes, no gains there sadly which is what I was really hoping for. The guy at the muffler shop was preaching to me about how I was going to be getting 20 MPG after the installation but I was very skeptical. Oh well....

Overall....I'm VERY happy with the AERO. Beats the crap outta spending $400-$800 on an exhaust system just to get the same performance I'm getting out of the AERO. I recommend it to anyone with CTD....great product!!!

If i remember my phyisics correctly the pressure in a closed system is equil at all points as in a baloon or a canning jar. a pipe however is different especially when you add a turbo. the turbo will dampen the pressure waves coming off each cylinder durring the exhaust stroke. when those pressure waves reach the resonator they slow down and get closer together because of the lager volume they have to fill (bernoulli's principle). after the resonator the pipe narrows back down to the same size as it was before the resonator forcing the pressure waves to speed up and the pressure slightly drops again untill it leaves the pipe where they strike the mass of the outside air. these pressure waves are also the sound that you are hearing. so by changing the interior structue of the resonator you can change the desity of the pressure waves and the speed at which they will exit the pipe thereby changing the sound of the engin. When you move the resonator along the length of the pipe ie closer or farther away from the turbo all you are doing is changing the location of where the gass slows down and sets up the desired pressure waves. I am not sure if the location of the resonator will change the exhaust temprature but i dont think you could damage the turbo in any way by having the resonator too close.

Steve you are cornfusing

replace the cat with the AERO and leave the muffler? Dont you mean leave the cat and replace the muffler with the AERO then eventually get a straight through cat like a Magnflow?

steve's old, he doesn't like how loud a single muffler is
