Default EARLY CUMMINS AUTO TRANNY Q's

What AUTO trans was used in the first cummins turbos? When did this tranny go out of use? I was told it was TF 727, and that was the first one they used. What year did they change to a different auto? Thanks in advance, Scott.

I believe that it was a 727, early 90's it changed to a 47RH, 96 it went to a 47RE and in 2003 went to a 48RE

this is correct. the TF727 went with the first cummins, then when the p-pumped cummins came out (94) the 47RH was installed.

you can generaly track transmission changes with engine changes. the new 6.7L is going to be getting the 68RE.

Ok does anyone have a specific year exactly the 727 quit going into these trucks? I just check my buddies 93 and he doesn't have the same as the 90 I'm looking at.

Actually its not the familiar RE transmission behind the 6.7L, it will be the AS68RC Aisin 6 Speed Automatic. The RE transmission is gone after the end of this year, the new engine starts production in January along with the new transmission.

Sorry to disagree but my understanding from Dodge and several others who work for Dodge is that the Aisin six speed auto is only going to be in the chasse model trucks and not in the pickup trucks. The six speed auto 68RE will only be used in the pickup trucks along with the new 6.7L Cummins.

I've got a 91. It is the 727 3-speed. There is a factory sticker under the hood that says 727 modified. But I have never been able to find what modified meant. Has 118000 miles on it. Trans has been serviced every 30,000 miles and I have never had a problem with it. Close to 80,000 of these miles have been put on towing a 5th wheeler.
