The lift pump is the "fuel pump" in your tank. I feeds you fuel to your injector pump. I believe mine is starting to go out also because at times under heavy acceleration from a stop my engine will loose all power and then sort of backfire leaving a plume of smoke behind me. I am not totally sure if this is the problem or if the Banks plug n play programmer is malfunctioning.... will have to d/c the banks for a few days to see.
The lift pump/pusher pump/fuel pump is the device that draws fuel from your tank and sends it to the fuel filter housing and then to the injection pump(which pressurizes the fuel and sends it to the injectors.
Prior to the '05 model year, this unit was mounted to the fuel filter housing. Starting with the '05's the pump is in the fuel tank(like most late model gassers)
The theory for the switch is that pushing the fuel up from the tank is easier on the pump than pulling it from the filter housing area.(according to the service writer at my local dealer) Whether this is true, I don't know.
When my lift pump died at 20,000 miles, the replacement was installed in the tank.

What year is your truck? prior to 1998.5 CTD's the lift pump is mechanical. It is bolted directly to the engine. They have no fuel tank pumps. Just the sending unit.
Good luck with your ride.

your lift pump is mounted on the back side of the fuel filter. if you sent the truck in to have it changed out at the dealer they will be putting it in the tank.
89-98.4 the pump is mechanical and mounted to the engine. 98.5-05.4 the electric lift pump is mounted to theback of the fuel filter canister. 05.5-present, the pumpis in the tank.

Hey Drew..... I am sure you get slammed with PM's so I'll ask here if it's no big deal.
I have read a few articles about Walbro pumps. Wasn't super favorable. Just wonderin' any pros/cons on eaither that you know of?
I thank you kindly. ....... and just because it was a masterpiece........ Did you get the "Drews Brew" poem I left for you?...LOL
Good luck with ALL our rides.
Had my lift pump go out already at about 72k. They put the 05' pump in, seems ok so far but rather have the FASS. They caught mine before the warranty ran out but said around $250 for the kit and didn't ask how much labor.
