I've read some bad things about this code, The truck seems to run alright but I did notice a lack of power around 2000rpm if I dont press heavy on the gas. Will I cause more damage to the truck if I take it on a 600mile trip this weekend? will it leave me stuck on the side of the road? What pumps could be going bad and how do I diagnose the pumps?BTW it is a 2001 2500 24v

I don't know that I'd take a trip that long without getting it checked out first. Don't really know how to fix it
but, it sounds like a computer function that's not working right.

Actually the code is fuel injection pump timing failure. Caused by the lift pump not providing enough fuel to the injection pump. But at this point when the code sets damage has already been done to the injection pump from lack of lubrication. You would need to have the injection pump and lift pump replaced. Should be warranty still if you are under a 100K miles.

Lift pump is a fancy word for fuel pump? How do I diagnose each one individually? Who makes a good repair manuel for these 2 problems? Are there better after market parts out there that last longer then rebuilds or junk yard parts?Whatss thecheepest route for replacing these parts.
Thank god I payed wholesale for this truck or I would be pulling my hair out right about now. Thanks,Chad

here's some info I found from a realiable poster at another forum............
A 216 code can be set by air in the fuel supply. Also if the lift pump has failed that can also cause it. Once in a while you will see a injector stuck open that puts combustion pressure into the VP44 and that has set the 216 code also. But usually the 216 code is set by diaphram or diaphram seals leaking. This is usually caused by failed transfer pump. Bosch did make some brass bore housings that would wear fast and cause the same 216 code. It could also just be worn out or you have contamination in the pump. Thanks
Sounds like your problem could be a few different things. What you don't want is the VP44 to be bad. That can cost some buck to replace. You may be able to have it rebuilt. The lift pump would be a cheap fix compared it that.
You can get a lift pump here... http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/de..._id=09-003-001
You can talk to these guys about a rebuilt VP44 ... http://www.industrialinjection.com/

Thanks for the info, I'm assumeing the links you gave me are for high performace parts and not stock replacements, I saw price's on ebay for the VP44 around $900 and the lift pump aprox $150. Should I be worryed about new/rebuilt ebay diesel parts? I'm going to try to find a good repair manuel today and start trying to figure out what the problem is. I'm not going to be takeing the truck out of town this weekend but the question is should I let it sit and not make local trips with it before I fix it? I would hate to run it lean and cause detionation andkill the motor, Isthata possabilty?Do diesels have O2 senors that I can get A/F readings? Can any injector readings on the scaner show that an injector is stuck open?My buddy has a snap on scanner so maybe I can check the fuel pressure with it, any other readings on the scaner I should look out for to help diagnose the problem? Is there a better forum to post these questions on?
Thanks again

I also have a P1899 code on. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned out some crap that was in there ,the air filter is in good shape and I took the codes off. The 216 code came back with in 10miles. The odd thing is the truck seems to have good power, I'm not use to driveing a diesel but it still has some ***** and gets 16.6mpg. I think I mite send it in to the dealer to diagnose the problem before I spend the money on a injection pump. Any easy ways to diagnose that specific pump?
