Default Performance/mileage enhancers

I have a 2001 quad cab long bed with auto trans. I am looking for some recommendations for changes to increase the gasmileage mainly. If it goes better so be it. I currently get around 15-17mpg in town. At $3 gal. I think it would be worthwhile to make some changes. Thanks.

from the begining of the MPG FAQ:

Those with Cummins engines may first want to read the 'White Paper'
from Cummins called:
"Secrets of Better Fuel Economy: The Physics of MPG"
which is oriented toward 18 wheel trucks but 90% applies to Ram pickups too.

are you kidding me??? well OK... use the Drews Brew and get an AFE drop in filter... then you could also get the tailgate extention that is on the 2005 & newer 1/2 ton trucks, it is said to be worth approx .5 mpg

For city driving
the three most effective ways to increase MPG are:

buy low rolling resistance tires
buy a block heater and warm the engine before you start it
drop the weight of the truck somehow

much more info in a very long read at:

I gained 4 mpg with these mods
1 Drop in filter
2 Edge Comp (keep on stage 5)
3 oil cooler
4 Electric fan
5 biult transmission (because tranny died on me) Big valve body, and 2000 ft tq converter
6 remover silencer ring (probably didn't do anything, but make the turbo louder)
7 4" exhaust (keeps temps down from more turbo boost)

Your biggest improvement probably came from that tranny and TC, as well as that electric fan. Having a TC that locks up tight and a tranny that shifts well, does wonders for performance AND mileage. Freeing up that fan does wonders as well.

I don't know if I'd go to that extreme for the sake of mileage though. You'll spend a lot more money that you'd ever recoup in fuel mileage. It's like doing a gear swap for mileage.....it'll never pay for itself.

My Smarty gave me roughly a 2-2.5 mpg increase. The power is awesome too!

That's were I'm seeing pretty good gains as well with mine. I spend a good majority of my time cruising at 50 - 60 mph on rolling hills. If I have the Juice on Lvl 3 or 4 while I'm cruising in this terrain, I notice my mileage goes up a bit, by about 1/2 MPG or more compared to the lower settings.
