Lightning vs SRT-10
You know, about every two to three weeks some yahoo starts this whole thing about SRT vs Lightning and how the SRT should be a lot faster with 500 hp etc., etc. So, for one last time let me remind our "killer" friend here that SRTs are multi-dimensional all around performers with awesome leather interior and a 500 watt stereo w/ subwoofer. They have the ability to excel at the drag strip, on an autocross course, a high speed oval, at the Bonneville Salt Flats, on the Autobahn or on the local streets. They do this with an incredible engine that is delivered from the factory in a very mild, reliable street tune. There is a ton of potential waiting to be tapped. A German owner runs on the Autobahn at over 130 mph - all day long - hauling his Harley in the back. He regularly runs over 150 mph when empty. If Dodge wanted to build a one dimensional drag racer they could have saved thousands of dollars and a ton of weight but they built something much more special. If all they wanted to do was go fast in a straight line they could lose the 15"/14" brakes, the 90 lbs. each wheel/tire combo, the tuned suspension, huge anti-sway bars, stereo, interior, etc. but they would be eliminating all the things that make this truck so much fun to drive. Yes, Lightnings are awesome and deserve of a lot of respect. They can be modded inexpensively to go real fast but, when modded, they are usually very one dimensional. There is more to high performance than drag racing.
I'm installing the STS turbo system on my SRT next week. I'll be looking at 700+ hp in what is still a very mild tune for not that much moola. I should be able to run low 12s (the computer says 11.90s) without sacrificing any driviability, reliability, handling, cornering or comfort. The SRT is only two years old. It takes a while for the aftermarket to tool up for any limited procuction vehicle. We're now seeing a lot more parts options and for a lot less - and that will only get better.
One other thing, the new Z06 engine is incredible. GM is squeezing great numbers out of their small block. The key word is "squeezing." They are running a huge cam, high compression, big rocker ratios, etc. These are specs that are considered on the outer edge of reliable street performance. The Viper V-10 is a very mild engine in comparison yet they make similar hp numbers (the V-10 still has a lot more torque). It has a relatively mild cam, lower compression and so forth. The bottom line is that Dodge has a lot of untapped performance left in this engine where GM has already played their most of their hand.
Lastly, a large percentage of SRT owners are ex-Lightning owners and they are thrilled with their SRTs. That has to tell you something. And about the cost, I don't know of one SRT owner who thinks they spent too much for their truck.
So if you prefer Fords more power to you. They make a great product IMO. I prefer my Dodge truck and all the many things that it can do so well.

srt10killer obviously doesn't understand the effects of 450 ftlbs of torque has on drag times. The SRT-10 is very traction limited. I'd so much love one of you guys to get some pop-up shocks and drag slicks, unhook the swaybars, and see what can be done to get the SRT-10 down the strip like a vehicle with that power can do.
Damn, that's the first time I ever thought of it that way and..... you're right. dodge WAS trying to make a really fun truck while still beating the lightning. Well, I'm leaving dodgeforum.com. I just want you to know, I'm a 15 year old kid, Bye.
