Well acording to Chuck Tator (Tator's Dodge) the Ram SRT-10 holds 11 QTS of oil and not the 8 1/2 that is in the handbook.
The Viper its self holds 8 1/2 which is why i think they have got it wrong in the book. The Ram SRT-10 has a larger oil pan than the Viper.
In my opinion running the truck with 8 1/2 QTS is asking for trouble!

Then there is a difference from year to year. My book says 8.5, and yes, my truck is full when I put in 8.5. While Chuck knows ALOT about Vipers my truck DOES NOT HOLD 11 quarts of oil.

Thats backwards...The Viper holds 11 quarts.

Ram SRT-10's hold 8.5.

Mobil1 Synthetic is very light and you have to really look to see it on the stick in certain light.

It also takes awhile for the oil to make it to the pan in these engines.

Most I have ever used is 8.7 quarts.....Have had two Ram SRT-10's and changed the oil between regular maint and engine mods about 12 times. Every time it took 8.5 quarts.

The maint book at the dealerships were/was wrong when these trucks first came out and they also said to fill to 11 quarts. They were all being over filled. Most dealerships have updated their docs and now have it correct at 8.5 quarts.

I still have not heard any body give me an answer. My 2005 srt ram does not show any oil on it when I put 81/2 quarts of oil in it.I added more oil a1/2 a quart at a time.At 10 quarts,it reads just a hair over add! Iwas told bya dodge performance tech and also by a customer relations person at dodge to fill the oil till I get a satisfactory reading on the dipstick.Does anybody have the same problem?I know what is reported in the owners manual. All I know is I have always used the dipstick to rely upon.

Did you buy this new? ANy mods like the rear lowered or performance upgrades? Beyond that I highly recommend you do as your dealer says, they will be the ones replacing the engine when it freezes, so doing as they say is a good think in this case.

Not trying to sound silly or insult you in any way, but make sure you are checking your oil level at the appropriate time. Run the engine 15min or so then shut her off and let sit for 5min. Then check the level. Sounds stupid I know but you can definately get inaccurate readings if checked at the wrong time. Every dodge dealer I've had my 04 at has remarked how the oil readings don't always seem accurate unless it's checked in the same manner.

I've had some oil pressue issues with my truck that so far the dealer has solved for the most part. From what I've been told the capacity is 8.5 like the manuals state, though I have a few fellow owners/friends that usually end up with 10 quarts or so in there after an oil change. I don't think there's any question that the oil and oil pressue is something every owner has to keep an eye on with these trucks/engines. They literally threw the block in there and got it to work in less then optimal conditions (ie. airflow, oil setup). I always keep extra oil in the truck just in case the dealer fixes aren't solving any unknown issues. Just don't buy your synthetic from the dealer we all know that.

Good luck with the truck
