Default 1997 ram B2500 van

Hello, I have a 1997 B2500 van that 1 week ago i got away with banging on the gas tank to get to run. It ran fine all week now after sitting 1 and half day it will not start. Just put new pump in and checked voltage to pump. Get 12 volts for 2 sec. then turns off. Van will run when you spray with carb clean. I do not have any pump action at all. Can you give any ideas on this no pump deal. Thank you.

Did you try another fuel pump relay?

How did you test the ground circuit? Your ground wire may be the problem since you did get the 12 volts positive power for 2 seconds. Most likely ground or relay as Alloro said. I would check the ground wire first in this case.

Added: Since your van is a 97 try changing the ASD or Starter relay with the fuel pump relay and see if that fixes it. If so the buy a new relay for the one you swapped to. If same problem then check the ground wire to the fuel pump.

I swapped relays cause they are all the same with no luck (did this after i found info in other post0. My 12 volts came right from thr connector to the fuel pump. Tried both grounds in the connector with same results. Bench tested old pump direct to pump motor and worked fine i guess. Does the pcm have issues that could cause this. I have now gone through all connectors that run from back to the front. I know it has to be a simple thing but to find it is not simple LOL. Fuel guage works just fine. With a new pump should you still here the pump kick on. Also is their somewhere to get a good wire diagram of this van. Looks like the 1997 year had things in it for only one year. Well tomorrow is another day. hpe you can shed some light on this. Thanx.

When you first turn the key on, the PCM turns on the pump for about 2 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. That part appears to be working correctly. The problem seems to be that the PCM isn't turning the pump back on when you turn the key to start. This could indicate a bad PCM.

Alloro, The funny thing is i do not get the 2 second pump action. Now my 12 volt reading could that be a ghost reading with no real amps to drive the pump. Is there any ground area i should check out. Now i have another question. What is the box under the driver seat? Thanx.

In your first post you wrote, "Get 12 volts for 2 sec. then turns off."

So which is it?

It's very possible considering that you had to bang the tank to get the pump to run before. Maybe banging the tank moved it enough to reestablish a ground.

The box under the drivers seat is the ACM (Airbag Control Module). Do not mess with it, it only controls the air bag and seat belt pretensioner. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is under the hood on the firewall above the engine.

The two grounds as you pointed out on the fuel pump connector are only one ground and the other controls the tank sending unit. So you have a 12 Volt positive wire to the pump motor, sending unit ground, and fuel pump ground. I am going to look up some info, will add to my post in a bit.
