1989 dodge B350 with a 1990 Dodge 360 engine. Will crank but will not stay running.
I pulled the engine out and rebuilt it a few months back. Installed new heads on it had the cam and crank turned and polished. Installed new rings, pistons, bearings and main bearings. The engine will crank but will not run for long. I have put new vacum lines on it and ran the lines according to the diagram. The only thing I can think of is an electrical issue. The vacum solinoides are working properly. Please help I have gone from cover to cover on both books I have on this unit. I have Chilton's and a Haynes repair manual.
What is the fuel pressure? Low pressure could cause this. You can try to put just a 2 to 4 table spoons of fuel in the air cleaner housing, make sure that it does not fall into the throttle body and try starting the engine, if it runs better for a few seconds than it is a fuel pump or delivery issue.
Also a weak spark from the coil.

The fuel pressure was the first thing I checked. It is fine. I think it may be in the TBI. I can crank it up and will surge for a few minutes. If I hold the excelerator on the side of the TBI with my hand to where the engine runs at a higher RPM I can feel the excelerator self adjusting and finally will stop.
I checked the timming. I also changed out the wiring harness, TBI housing and injectors, and the three vacum solinoids. Still having the same issue. Ready to get some explosives and blow the thing up.
That doesn't cut it. With the distributor 180 degrees off, the timing will still read correctly. You have to make sure that the distributor is approaching the #1 tower during the compression stroke. The only way to know you're on the compression stroke is to remove the #1 plug and stick your finger in the hole while the engine is being turned and watching as the timing marks line up. If you feel compression being forced out past your finger, you're on the compression stroke.

I reset the timming and it it is running better, however it backfires when I try to take off to fast and after it has ran for a while if I shut it off it is really hard to get started again, I am affraid I am going to burn up the starter. When it does crank up it has white smoke and a strong gas smell cumming out of the tail pipe. Is the timming still off?
