Default Air Conditioning Kit - 1979 Van

I have a 1979 Jamboree Rallye RV based on a '79 Dodge Sportsman chassis. It has the 360 engine, 4bbl carb, and 3 speed automatic. I have recently replaced the steering coupler and done some minor maintenance, but would like to know if anyone here has bought and installed an air conditioning kit for this type of vehicle? Currently, there is no factory air conditioning, so I've been pricing kits to install myself. If someone has done this before, any advice, tips, suggestions before I spend the money? Thanks!

If yours has a built in generator and roof mount air conditioner you may want to stick with that. I have known a couple of people whom just start the generator and turn on the roof AC and go on their way. 1) it will save you money and headache trying to mount one on the engine. 2) this way it will not rob the engine of any horsepower when you would need it most.

Mobile Auto - I actually thought of going that route, with the generator. I do have a roof top AC unit, but it's strictly the 120v system - usually only will run when at a site hook up and the electric is plugged in. I may still look at that option because I agree - why burden the engine with another horsepower robbing accessory, but it gets so darn HOT here in AZ!

Alloro - I've seen those kits. I was just wondering if anyone else has bought and installed an AC kit and what to look out for, what to look for, hassles, tips, etc. It appears, when reading that site, to be careful on which evaporator to buy and install. Thanks!

What does it draw for amps? If it's low enough, perhaps an inverter will power it.

Most of them pull 15 amps on 120 volts.

That's 1800 watts...a bit steep for an inverter. I guess he's stuck with the setup like in this picture.

LOL, that is funny. I wish I gotten a pic of a Ford van I see around here in the summer time that has a window unit hanging out the drivers side in the middle window. Not sure where his generator is to run it.

Reminds me of a story that someone told me. When they were kids, for AC in their car, their Dad would buy a big chunk of dry ice, put it inside a styrofoam cooler, and then direct the heater to blow towards the floor, without the heat on. Gotta love all that CO2 being directed to the inside of the car!

Yes, I don't have a built in generator, and with the price of a new one...YIKES! I have an power inverter that 1500w - it's enough to run the blower on the AC unit, but not the compressor - it overloads the inverter and it shuts down. But, an inverter is alot cheaper than a generator! Thanks for the advice, folks.

Well then, this is a perfect excuse to buy a larger inverter!
