Default VSS bad, replaced. still no od/cruise/speedo

i recently acquired my dads 92 b250...i love it, as im in a band and we tour. this things going to be my home away from home..

im in the process of tuning her up and maintenance...my dads a trucker and the vans sat for 8mnths..

well it was dead, i knew the speed/cruise/od didnt work and it sputters..my dad suggested a $200 junkyard tranny replacement and a tuneup.

thanks to the internet i know i probably had a fouled VSS, and an o2 sensor issue..

which proved true, with a code 15 and 21. only errors it shows.

i went and bought a replacement VSS from autozone. i unscrewed the old VSS which had to be unplugged because it was one big seized unit going into the side of the extension housing(?). the new one spun freely around the giant nut you tighten..

however it came with a new wireplug which is like 15" shorter than the one going to the original VSS...so i screwed the new VSS into the tranny, until it was tight and the VSS no longer freely spun, was this a mistake?

i also reused the old wire, as it would be physically impossible to use the new one..

was i supposed to leave the VSS free to spin around the big nut?

i still have a code 15...which is a pain as i would love my OD for when were going show to show...last weeks show got kinda pricey with the gas.

could the wiring running to the VSS be shorted? why would they give me an OE replacement with that plug thats way too short? its not a jumper or anything.as i thought might have been the case.

i think i might remove the old wire, now that i have more time, and undo the connections and redo it real quick with some 18g wire to see if that solves it..

hell maybe my brand new VSS is bad. idk.

ive tried to do alot of searching, but its hit or miss for this subject it seems, so i had to join so i could ask teh experts...

thanks for your time guys!

The only VSS I am familiar with is my own('89), and it is inline, on the speedo cable, under the brake booster, not on the transmission.

I have found issues with my wires leading back to the transmission, to my NeutralSafetySwitch and OD and lock up solenoids. Seems they are not protected from chafing very well from the factory.

i am planning on trying to rewire the wiring...i mean that would have to be it.

is it 5v running from the pcm to the vss? im going to try and borrow a voltmeter to check it..that would make things easier if i could just use that.

Welcome to DF
What you need to do, is raise the rear tires off the ground. Start the engine put the trans in drive and loosen the bolt holding the vss sensor. turn the sensor until you see the speedo needle moving. One more thing. Did you put the gear on the speed sensor?
