I'm thinking of replacing the manifold gasket on my 93' 318 (105k miles). I'm using more oil than I would expect and plugs are fouled so I suspect I may have a leaking gasket (or plenium?).
How big is this job and other than new gaskets is there anything else I need to have ready?
It's fairly straightforward. Disconnect some wires, fuel and vacuum lines, radiator hoses, the A/C-alternator bracket, remove some bolts, and off it comes. The plenum is on the bottom-side of the intake. Clean everything and reassemble. Give yourself about 4 hours to do it.
You might want to replace that little heater bypass hose and it's clamps while you have the intake off if it appears to be old or in rough shape. It can only be replaced when either the intake or water pump is off.
ah good tip. I've replaced a few hoses but only ones accessable without removing too much other stuff. is the thermostat get-at-able when doing the intake or is that a water pump one?
The t-stat is in the top of the intake, and yes, do yourself another favor and replace it when the intake is out. It's much, much easier that way to clean off the old gasket.
