Thumbs down 1999 Ram Van Engine Dying

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram Van with a 5.9 engine. It dies at idle and sometimes won't start. I am think a fuel pump might be going out. Any other ideas. I was reading on here that the fuel pump and fuel filter are one assembly located within the fuel tank. Can you verify? Thanks for any information. This website has been very helpful in the past. I wish I knew more to try to help also. Thanks again.

I added some links to see if these are the right part.........

Yes that is correct.

Have you taken a fuel pressure reading yet, or are you just deducing the fuel pump is the problem. It's kind of an expensive part to be guessing.

Good advice from alloro. Lots of labor involved in changing the fuel pump so you wouldn't want to do that on a guess that it's bad.

Thanks for the responses. I agree that it makes no sense to guess that the fuel pump is bad. My grand caravan acted the same way and it was the fuel pump. Pain in the you know what to change. What would you say is a good order of parts to check to fix the problem? How do you check the fuel pressure?

I hope Im making sense, just got off work and I am dog dead tired. Off to bed. I will check for responses in the morning and then you know what I will be doing this weekend....

By the way the ram van has 87,000 miles on it. If you need more info, please ask. Thanks again.

There's a schrader valve on the fuel rail that you connect a fuel pressure gauge to. Connect the gauge, start the engine and note the PSI reading.

I don't have a fuel pressure guage but will call the local auto parts store to see if they rent one. If not, any ideas? TIA

Two things to check for to see if the idle is a problem.

1. Clean the IAC or replace the IAC. Cost is under $8.

2. The CAT could be clogged. Get under the van and bang on the CAT. If it rattles like junk moving around inside, it's clogged.

I was on my way to do the checks recommended on this thread. I tried to start the van, it would not start, cranked over, odometer started flashing, No Bus came up on the odometer, and the check engine light came on. Any ideas?

I am going to seach the No Bus issue. TIA

No Bus mean a loss of communication between the electronics in the odometer and the PCM. Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 times this means the PCM is bad.

Bummer, I am guessing the PCM is the computer. Is there any checks I can do to verify this? And if it is bad, do I buy one or get this one repaired? TIA
