Welcome to DF
Anytime you turn on the heater or a/c system the compressor does come on. What are you trying to do?

Had a 2000 Ram Van that had this same issue. I just unplugged the compressor in the fall and plugged it back in in the early summer.

Then I would start by checking the control head and cables going to the heater box. And the heater control head has vacuum, make sure you have vacuum at the control head. Because the default is to the defrost and floor.

Not when the selector is in the floor or vent positions.

Yeah, turn your temperature dial to cold. But if you mean the compressor is running when the selector is set on Heat (Floor), then you have a bad selector switch.

Thanks ! I'll start with the selector switch.
