Make sure the shock bolts are not loose, springs or the exhaust tail pipe hitting the spring. Also check the spare tire too.

Well, there are a few things in the back to look at.

- Are the gas tank straps secure?
- The fill neck to the gas tank?
- How are the rear door hinges?
- Rear universal joint alright? (could be the issue)
- The rear differential?
- Does this van have rear seats or a rear sofa bed?
- The jack by the rear door?

Nice recordings banging on the shocks.

Can you record the noise in the back either from the inside of the van or outside?

Could be the rear leaf spring shackles, the ones on my '98 make some noise.

I would call that van a '97 based on the fuel tank location and exhaust pipe exit to the left under the fuel door. What is the date of manufacture?

My bad. You wrote 88 but I misread as 98. Time for glasses?
