Must say does not sound good, how did the fluid smell and was it bright red?

Double check you filled your trans with the proper fluid as the wrong fluid will
destroy the tranny in short order. Your tranny operated correctly after the fliud
filter change and now is slipping again is a bad sign.

Personally I would check the level again with the tranny warm in neutral on a truly flat surface, hopefully it my be a few quarts low. Also be careful NOT to overfill as that can damage the trans as well.

Did you adjust both bands properly when you changed the fluid/filter?

No, you're getting hosed. Somewhere between $1500 and $1800 would be fair and normal.

Sorry to read it is toast may be a good idea to spend 30 bucks and a hour of your time to install a trans cooler
I notice my engine ran about 10 degrees cooler(while towing) after installing my trans cooler, good insurance for the trans.

Best of luck hope you can get that rebuild price down.

That vehicle already has a factory installed transmission cooler just ahead of the radiator.

Just a thought should my 96 3500 have come with one as it did not have one when I purchased it ~4 years ago?
