towing weight and tongue weight
hey all,
I'm considering if its possible to tow a travel trailer next year with my 2002 3500 ram van.
anyone have any details or first hand experience with towing specs (gross towing weight, tongue weight) , mileage, etc
I was thinking to put both my motorcycles (lets say once the interior of the van is loaded atleast 1000lbs, then i would like to hook up a travel trailer to camp at the track.
cheers!

Good afternoon, we have (2) B3500 and do tow quite a bit, and a annual trip from Boston to
Key West with a 96 B3500 tongue weight near 1000k lbs and total pull weight that far exceeds the vans rating 10K+. Dodge vans tow very well I would recommend adding air bags to you suspension if you plan on towing more than 7K and van is a extended van.
Have towed tens of thousands of miles with Dodge extended vans you will not have a issue with a average travel trailer be sure your load is balanced and rig is safe trailer brakes work trailer bearings greased and drive wisely. Should you carry your bikes inside in my opinion you will need air bags or coil over shocks as you will be putting a bit of weight on the rear axle.
I can answer any question you have just send me a message (PM).
Allow me to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season.

We have towed Travel Trailers loaded down to about 5K with a B1500 V6 3.55 rear. It had difficulty with the hills.
Our current Ram Van is the B2500 on the B3500 HD 1-ton suspension. This has the 5.2L/318cid with the 3.92 rear. It pulls like nothing is behind it when properly tuned. The van has the 8-lug rims and the HD brakes.
We have towed travel trailers, cargo trailers, animal trailers, car haulers without an issue. Sure, the 5.9L/360 would have done better overall.
Starting in 2000, Dodge made these vans standard equipment with the towing package. This package has the regular tranny and oil coolers in the RAD plus the tranny air cooler as well.
With that said, the rear axle without any rust to the frame nor on the rear shackles allows towing up to 7,200lbs without any extra hardware. With airbags, and the RoadMaster Active Suspension Kit, one can reach the 10K towing easily.
Due note ... Chrysler has a towing bulletin for our vans. The van needs to run with Load-E tires to manage the weight and maneuver well with the handling. Tires are a BIG factor when towing above 5K.
For all of those who really need to know what their van is capable of towing in the standard stock configuration, go to the Dodge Towing Guide and look up your van.

Looking up your van by year ... This removes the Sprinter and puts the Ram van in ...

2002 dodge ram van/wagon 3500 BASE, 2WD, MAXI Bed, Transmission - Four-Speed Automatic, 46RE, Engine - 5.2-Liter Magnum(R) SMPI V8:

With Axle Ratio - 3:92 Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 7400 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 8700 lbs
Payload [i] = 3749 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 4951 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 2803 lbs/2803 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear [i] = 4000 lbs/5360 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 12500 lbs
My years of Ram Vans use to be in the list, but as time goes on, Dodge drops them. I had saved my van info to PDF files for keep sake. Earlier reports from Dodge shows 8,800lbs for towing for my 2001.

Agree with the tire recommendation Light truck tire are a must, one of our vans has
tires that are standard on duallies, narrow very stiff sidewalls.
Also important if you have a 5.9 which you probably do check the year end gears hopefully you
have 3.92 or 4.10. We generally never stick to 65mph that delivers ~ 8 mpg and the engine turning 1900 rpm. A nice calm pulling experience should you not have weight distribution equipment
get set up you will be happy with that investment.
