Crazy question of the day: Hydrometer
I ordered a floating ball hydrometer off Ebay. When I got it, all the ***** were in the top, and therefore, out of sequence. I assume each individual colored ball is engineered to float at a certain specific gravity. Now for the question: does anyone know the order of how the colored ***** are supposed to be stacked in the tube.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I should have noted this is for a lead acid auto battery. On the package is says the sequence, top to bottom, is: Gray, Orange, Green, Blue.
Unfortunately, the ***** in this one are colored: Gray, Red, Yellow, and Black.

Not sure why you would buy that kind off eBay, because for less than $3 you can get the much better Prestone scale/pointer type tester over at most any auto parts store.
But to answer your question, the colors have no meaning other than to make them easier to see in contrast to each other. Your concern will be with how many are floating and how far up the tube they rise. Did it not come with instructions?

Ok -- Thanks for the info. Just giving in to internet laziness - it's easier to order it and have it shipped, than it is to burn gas and fight traffic.

The floating ball hydrometers are the most ridiculous tool on the planet.
The plastic hydrometers that claim to be temperature compensated, are not.
often it is impossible to remove the bubbles from the float needle and it will yield higher than actual results.
The best Hydrometers are the glass turkey baster sytle with a glass float, and ones which have a thermometer on it calibrated to tell you how many 0,00x to add or subtract from the reading are a Zillion times more accurate and precise.
Do not waste money or time using anything else.
Rinse it promptly after use.
And may your specific gravity be in the green
