Default NEWBIE: Tranny hose replacement

Hey guys,

96 Dodge Ram van 2500 360 5.9L

One of my tranny hoses sprung a leak, and I'm totally new at repairs but this seems like it would be pretty simple. I attached a picture.

If I want to google instructions for how to do this properly what should I search? I'm not sure what this hose is called.

What do I need for this?

Thank you so much. This has been one of the most helpful forums for me.

It's either the supply or return transmission fluid hose going to the cooler in the radiator. Common for them to leak. Any auto parts store should be able to get you the right one. Welcome to the forum.

Does it matter for the repair if it is the supply or return? If so is there a way I can find out which it is? This hose is on the passenger side.

Thank you!

you wont need to drain all the fluid, you will lose a little bit though, so you will want to top it off....

you can get that part at the auto pats store... some people will insist you go oem, but some will say go with the auto parts store one... I would actually check the dealership for a quote, sometimes they are around the same price for parts.... Also, some aftermarket companies available at the auto parts store, are actually made by the same company that produces the OEM part....

I think the part you are looking for is the transmission cooler line assembly

Ok, thank you. So I should do the entire assembly, not just the hose?

I came across this video and the guy just did the hose.

if that hose comes off, just do the hose, the metal line is probably fine unless there is a smashed section or an actual leak you can see.... I tried looking up the part for you, but didn't see the hose alone, I didn't try looking it up too hard though

Go to a parts store and ask them to show you both. Compare to which one you needs and go from there.

Ok, thank you. I'm a little confused, so I'll just have my mechanic buddy take a look at it before I do anything.

ok, so from your picture, the green circled area is the nut you are going to have to do, it will require 2 wrenches, the side on the left, wont move, but needs to be held in place allowing the side on the right to unscrew - it is a compression fitting

the part of the pic circled in red, is a snap in fitting, you depress those 2 tangs sticking out, and the hole thing will just pull out of the hole
