Default How to tell if I have a 4000 lb axle?

From reading here, apparently it matters if you have a 4000 lb "axle" or... something else.

I have a B3500 maxi high roof 2WD, the wheels have 8 lug nuts. What do I look for?

A forum search didn't help on this one.

Take a look at the manufacturers sticker on the door/door frame on drivers side as you open the door, front axle rating should be listed there. If no sticker the local dealership should be able to give you a print out with your vin #

I found the axle rating sticker on the bottom side of the hood just above the battery. It could be anywhere.

I am actively looking for a used Dodge RAM truck... use the web site below, substituting YOUR VIN# after the = and it may provide you with the build sheet...
not sure how far back in years this works for... but has worked for me for 2007 and up so far...

Look at the cover on the rear! It will tell you what it is. Dana 60-80.

OK, it was in the sticker on the door jam, GAWR Front is 4000 lbs. The thing under the hood is almost unreadable any more.

Despite being heavy duty, I still have sloppy steering. I guess I will find a shop and see what they say. I looked at doing it myself but it appears to require a lot of special tools to change ball joints.

Looks like that build sheet generator doesn't work for 98's.

I ran my VIN with the link and it actually worked other than it says my van has Rack and Pinion Steering and Navigation.

The hood sticker is good because it shows which gearing you have, transmission type, etc.

Hello all, I have a 02 Ram Van 2500 CNG in need of front ball joints.

GAWR tag shows 3880 front. Does this indicate 4000lb axle?

I've tried running the build sheet but the VIN doesn't work in any of the sites. 284JB25T62K124219

Thanks!

It's not an 8, it's a B. 7800# GVW, but, doesn't talk about individual axles.

The only listings I see are for the 3500 lb, or 4000 lb front axle. So, yeah, I would expect yours is the 4000 lb feller.

Thanks very much. That VIN was sent to me when I asked for it but now looking for the tag I can see you're correct.

Ordered both sets will return whichever pair I dpn't use and report back.
