Default fuel pump/water pump replacement

i bought my van, 96 b2500 cargo, it had 156,000 miles on it, now 163,00. bought it up in jersey. drive it down to texas have done some small fixes on it. when i bought it, he told me the things he had repaired/replaced.
i am curious if i should have the fuel pump replaced since it had never been replaced/serviced as far as i know. same with the water pump.
a freind said he would do the water pump just because of driving ling distances in the texas heat.
sometimes the van will stall after i put it in gear or not start at all. once i wiggle the wires from the distributor cap though, everything is fine. should i look into maybe replacing those? how can i clean the contact on them at least?
i have already replaced the air filter, radiator cap and hose, flushed radiator, distributor cap and sensor underneath it.

spelling, orry have a cast on my arm!

thanks

I wouldn't replace either unless you are experiencing issues like a leaking water pump or low fuel pressure.

I agree, if it ain't broke... you know the rest You already flushed the cooling system and you might consider running some decent fuel system/injector cleaner now and again when getting fuel

As for the stalling when put in gear it might be the IAC (Idle air control valve) and orifice on the throttle body is crudded up and needs a good cleaning up. Try searching here on "Cleaning the iac" and see what you find, it's an easy fix and it will really help out... youtube has video help also. If you want to be really manly lookup "how to clean the throttle body"

looking from inside your van with the motor cover off the iac is attached with 2 torx screws (doesn't get much easier than this) to the rear side of the throttle body and has a wired plug connected

[QUOTE=happyhourtx;3353380]thanks for this info. being as this is the first vehicle i have owned, i am slowly learning stuff. QUOTE]

There was a first time for all of us so congrats, and don't mind helping if I can on some things... other things i'm the one asking

As for fuel system cleaners...? There's a bunch to choose from! I have an 01 chevy pickup too so based on some reading and not a little confusion chose the techron brand. walmart has it reasonably cheap .
I've tried others with no complaint but main goal for me is fuel above 1/4 tank to keep cool and flowing, keeping injectors lubed and clean and hopefully the pump likes some of that. that's all just from reading around here in the forums.
My 99 has 293k and would like to roll it over to 3k working out of it still running well as it does

I would suggest gumout for the fuel system. All in one fuel system cleaner. I have personally witnessed the effectiveness of these products. I swear by them.

so i cleaned the IAC just now, started the van up, and it sounds like i am feathering the gas. like i am just tapping the gas revving it up. does this for a few minuted and then is fine. went to drive it and it stalled out twice. got it home and started it up, same idle problem,
like im tapping the gas after about 2 minutes, it dies.

Could also be a bad IAC valve. But first try the finger trick to see if the IAC responds.

Do this with the engine running, the doghouse and air cleaner cover off. Feather the gas to keep the engine running near idle if need be. Using your finger, start covering the little air intake hole right above the IAC. As you start to choke the engine off the IAC will respond by pulling it's plunger back. Do this a few times to work the plunger back and forth and see if it holds idle after.
