Default 1996 B3500 intermitten blower fan speed

When the van is cold the fan blows as it should. After being ran a while (a couple of hours) the fan will slow and not respond to the speed switch and sometimes shut off completely. Then after highway driving it will just kick back on. I thought it might be the resistor so I replaced it. The wires at the resistor looked good and clean. It still does the same issue but it seems to not be as bad. I feel the blower motor can't be bad if it works when cold, I suspect something else in the wiring somewhere but I am not sure exactly where to look. The internet has pointed out to a faulty ignition switch in the pickups of this year range. Does this same switch design live in my 96 B3500?

Don't know if your van uses the same ignition switch..... Think I would drive it till the fan started acting up, and then feel the fan motor housing. Is it too hot to touch? Might be the bearings finally giving up the ghost.

Sounds like a worn blower motor to me.

I will have to check the blower motor problem is it always happens when I am out of town or on the highway and not a good place to be testing. Thank you for the reply. Autozone online says I should need a Duralast LS711 switch, would this be the same type they talk about having the bad design?

Thank you,
Brian

I don't think the switch is your issue. I have rarely seen those fail. Resistor blocks, and blower motors though.... yeah, I have replaced more of those than I can count..... Even the resistor blocks is generally a binary thing. It either works, or it doesn't.... rarely is there an in-between.

I've developed a new issue in the last few days that leads me to think it might be the switch. My blinkers now will only work intermittently also when cold. My cruise works but I can't turn it off with the button at all just the brake switch. I wonder if the wires in the tilt column are getting warn? Sometimes when I can't get the cruise to engage I can tilt the column up or down a little and then the set button will work.

That sounds like a separate issue.

That said, I have the same problem in my 96 truck. Tilt the wheel up too far, and various things stop working.

You're affecting the linkage rod length going from the ignition lock down to the ignition switch.
