2001 Ram Van 1500 3.9 32rh trans late 1-2 shift after warm up
I did. the cable is stuck as far forward to where there is very llittle pull on the lever down in the trans wich sould cause it to upshift at the slowest of speed. I also checked the oil level very carefully on a level surface. I had to take some of it out through the filler tube but there was no change. The shaking of tghe needle suggests there could be air in the oil in the governor or before . Very hard to tell . If the governor check out good or if I put another one ind and doesn't fix the problem i'm gonna replace the tranny .
Is there a lot of slack in the cable?? The way its supposed to work, when you step on the gas, it pulls the cable, which pulls the lever at the trans, the further that lever moves, the later/harder the shift. If it doesn't move much, I would expect the behavior to be more consistent.
Yeah
there is no consistency. There is a lot of relative slack to keep the tv pressure low but still it sometimes shifts at 15 sometimes at 2t mph and it always downshifts back down from 3 to 2 when i ease off the gas.

Hey, I hate to revive an OLD thread here, but do you think the TV cable could cause the trans to NOT shift by itself? It shifts just fine if I do it manually. Or do you think possibly band adjustments? I just got a '95 Ram Van 1500 given to me with the 3.9L and 32rh tranny. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I HOPE I'm in the right place. I looked all over the site and this looked like where I belonged.
Depends on how it is adjusted. Though, I suspect there is something else going on as well. You trans is purely mechanically controlled. No electronics involved at all. (aside from TCC) Why it will only shift manually is a very good question. Think I would start with dropping the pan, changing fluid/filter, adjusting the bands (if there are any?), and also make sure the tv cable is adjusted properly, and works the way it should. (moves freely)
I really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. I'll be looking at both this weekend. I wanted to change out the fluid and filter and clean up the pan anyway. I'll go ahead and adjust L/R band while I'm in here IF the TV cable doesn't do the trick...
