Started my van this morning and the oil gauge read zero pressure. Checked the oil and it was low. Filled it up, restarted and got a normal reading. When I shut it off and started again, it went back to zero. It alternates this way every few times I start it. I was thinking it’s the pressure switch, but if I unplug the switch while the gauge reads normal, it stays at normal. Is there a sender as well? Could there be another issue with the oil system?

Oil pressure sensor is right next to the distributor, and so far as I know, that's the only one. Change the sensor, sure sounds like the problem to me.

Does the engine makes any low oil noises when the pressure is down?

 

No noise/knocks/etc. Sounds the same as when the gauge shows normal. I was running it and listening from inside with the engine shroud off.

 

i am having low oil pressure, oil pressure dropping out,,,poured in Seafoam oil treatment and still had problem after 300 miles,,, removed oil pan and the oil pump intake screen was almost completely restricted with hard black carbon,, installed new pump & intake tube/screen, all good back to normal oil pressure. 115,000 miles on engine,,,new oil & filter every 6000 miles with Valvoline Syn 10W30 & Mobil one filter
